Following the heart-wrenching loss of his wife, LAPD narcotics Sergeant Martin Riggs, a former Special Forces operative, finds himself spiraling into a dark abyss filled with despair and recklessness. His unpredictable behavior raises alarm among the police therapists, yet his captain believes that Riggs’ emotional turmoil is merely a disguise to secure an early retirement with a generous pension. To counter this, the captain strategically assigns Riggs to work alongside his fellow war veteran and seasoned Homicide Sergeant Roger Murtaugh, whose own experiences in Vietnam have shaped him into a battle-hardened individual. Initially, their partnership is fraught with tension and skepticism, as Murtaugh dismisses the depth of Riggs’ suffering. However, it becomes clear that Riggs’ anguish is authentic, leading Murtaugh to gradually replace his doubt with empathy.

In the midst of this volatile partnership, Murtaugh receives a perplexing phone call from an old acquaintance, Michael Hunsaker, who implores him to help rescue his daughter Amanda from a life of prostitution. Tragically, before they could connect, Amanda takes her own life, jumping from an apartment balcony in a moment of despair. The autopsy uncovers that she had been poisoned with contaminated drugs, suggesting a deeply sinister plot behind her untimely death. As Riggs and Murtaugh seek to speak with her pimp, they endure a brutal assault that forces Riggs to take drastic action to protect Murtaugh. Their investigation eventually leads them to Dixie, a prostitute who may have witnessed Amanda’s tragic fall and could be intertwined in the sinister events surrounding her demise.

Just as they reach Dixie’s residence, a catastrophic explosion transforms the site into a chaotic scene filled with rubble and destruction. A following search uncovers evidence of a mercury switch explosive, recalling the lethal devices used by CIA mercenaries during Riggs’ time in Vietnam. Their inquiries bring them to a tattooed individual whose elite special forces insignia evokes memories of Riggs’ own war scars.

As the investigation deepens, Riggs becomes suspicious of Hunsaker’s conduct at Amanda’s funeral and confronts him regarding his involvement. Hunsaker discloses that he had been part of a covert CIA paramilitary unit known as “Shadow Company,” which operated under the guise of disrupting the local heroin trade during the Vietnam War. After the conflict, Shadow Company metamorphosed into a nefarious criminal organization, orchestrating the transport of vast quantities of illegal drugs from Asia to America, headed by the retired General Peter McAllister and his loyal associate Mr. Joshua. Hunsaker’s role as a banker was crucial in laundering their illegal proceeds into legitimate funds. He had originally contacted Murtaugh to confess and testify against Shadow Company, but his intentions were thwarted when Amanda was brutally murdered by Joshua as retribution. This deadly encounter escalates when Joshua arrives at the funeral in a helicopter, leaving a trail of death as he eliminates Hunsaker and vanishes into the night. In subsequent chaos, Joshua targets Riggs in a drive-by shooting, though Riggs survives thanks to his bulletproof vest; this leads to Riggs faking his own death to gain an upper hand in their dangerous investigation.

As tensions mount, Murtaugh finds himself trapped in a perilous situation when Shadow Company kidnaps Rianne, compelling him to meet them at El Mirage Lake. In a tense showdown, Riggs provides hidden support, unleashing sniper fire to aid their escape; unfortunately, the trio is soon recaptured and taken to a nightclub basement, a front for Shadow Company’s illicit operations. What follows is a harrowing chapter of intense torture, where both Riggs and Murtaugh are subjected to excruciating pain as they are interrogated for information. Yet, Riggs makes a daring escape, venting his fury and liberating Murtaugh and Rianne from their captors. Although Joshua narrowly evades capture, Murtaugh exacts revenge by bringing down McAllister.

Foreseeing Joshua’s inevitable retaliation, Riggs sets a cunning trap at Murtaugh’s home. When they confront Joshua, a fierce confrontation ensues before he is subdued. In a moment of restraint, Riggs chooses to let the authorities apprehend Joshua, who ultimately attempts a daring escape armed with an officer’s gun. As Joshua opens fire on Riggs and Murtaugh, they spring into action, returning fire to bring an end to his menace once and for all.

The aftermath of this intense ordeal leaves Riggs seeking solace in a heartfelt Christmas Day dinner with Murtaugh and his family. As a symbol of their deepening friendship and mutual respect, Riggs presents Murtaugh with the hollow-point bullet he had kept as a reminder of his own mortality, now deemed unnecessary. The weight of their shared experiences looms large, yet for these two brothers-in-arms, the essence of Christmas resonates in the steadfast bond they have forged amidst adversity.
