In the late 1930s, three reclusive middle‑aged spinster sisters keep their dilapidated family estate in rural Ireland. Otto Beck, a perpetual Bavarian graduate student prone to pompous declamations, rents the back lodge to work on his obscure thesis. Imogen Langrishe, the least restrained sister, begins an affair with him, taking it seriously, while Otto merely enjoys the cheap lodging and her company.
