Conscription training begins on the outskirts of the tiny town of Lillköping, where a bank clerk is promoted to officer while the bank manager ends up as an ordinary conscript. All the men vie for the attention of Elsa, the cook who prepares their meals, and the whole group treats the drills with little seriousness.
