Katerina Izmailova, a beautiful but uneducated merchant’s wife in a remote Russian province, endures loneliness while her older husband is often away. In a childless marriage she meets the worker Sergei, who seduces her. Their illicit affair sparks a passion that becomes her sole purpose, spiraling into destructive choices and a tragic downfall.
