In 1991, after a brutal massacre at Bonzo’s Ranch, Edwin the Clown records a confession to send to his mother, detailing the murders in a string of darkly comic moments that mix menace with a chaotic sense of humor. Fast forward fifteen years, and Edwin is glued to a TV screen when Bonzo announces the reopening of Clown Camp at his ranch. The announcement triggers a deep, blistering rage in Edwin, reigniting a thirst for revenge that has simmered for years. The stage is set for a new nightmare to unfold, and the film expands its cast of colorful, broken clowns as they converge on the same remote location.

At a gas station near the road, the troupe of performers—Brandi and her fellow clowns along with the daring pair of Vinnie and Lenny Boboski—stock up on food and supplies before making their way toward Bonzo’s Ranch. Outside, they cross paths with Tipsy and Brandi, a tense moment underscored by shared loyalties and the looming threat of the unknown. An ominous warning from Crazy Ernie about a “Death Curse” at a rival camp, Camp Sparkling Lake, only adds to the tension, but Brandi stays resolute that they’re headed for the ranch anyway.

Inside the camp, Philbert greets the other students, including Puff and Squirts, and the atmosphere is a strange blend of performance art training and unsettling competition. Edwin, in a bid to keep control, ensnares a female hippie clown and uses a magic clown car to rapidly loop around the field, an act that ends in a brutal car mishap. The day’s lessons begin with Sergeant [Funnybones] the Third, who arrives to teach, while Tex, a rodeo clown, expresses doubt about the students’ abilities and the worth of their craft.

Edwin’s sabotage continues as a whoopee cushion disables Tex’s hay baler, leading to a grisly, improvised accident that belies the camp’s lighthearted persona. A slide show on clowning history follows, noting the infamous claim that clowning is “the second oldest profession in history” after prostitution. Amid the lesson, [Philbert] flirts with [Valerie], a budding clown with a complicated past and a fearsome reserve.

Around a crackling fire that night, Butzer Pie shares the legend of Edwin the Clown and his failed attempts to qualify as a true circus performer fifteen years earlier, a backstory that foreshadows the killer’s relentless pursuit of a perfect act. On the camp’s final day, Edwin seizes one last chance to succeed on stage; he enlists another student to join him, only to have the act ruined when a phone rings and someone answers, sabotaging the act. Fueled by humiliation, Edwin is driven to violence, a trail of pies and blood marking the end of the camp as he murders and dumps bodies into Sparkling Lake before vanishing into the night.

The next morning, the survivors confront a grim aftermath: Squirts reveals a lewd joke that triggers a PTSD flashback for Valerie, who recalls the trauma of her father’s assault in her childhood. Philbert offers sympathy, and Valerie admits she would rather not be a clown, a sentiment that resonates with the family’s complicated history—Bonzo’s desire to turn Valerie into a star and her own refusal to follow that path. The group presses on through a day of pie-throwing lessons, while tension between the living teachers and Edwin’s hidden hideaway grows.

As the body count climbs, Sergeant Funnybones punishes Philbert and Puff during a Seltzer-slinging drill, only to be revealed as a mortal threat when the two stumble upon Edwin’s hideout. Edwin reveals himself in a terrifying moment, stabbing the stern instructor in the face and escalating the camp’s chaos. Edwin then captures Bonzo’s former mentor figure and, after a shocking turn, hangs Bonzo himself in his own bathroom, using a trick of prescription medicines to stage the suicide.

Philbert and Valerie grow closer as they comfort one another, and the couple’s bond is tested by Edwin’s sinister games; Valerie’s past comes roaring back as she revisits a memory of self-defense and a murder committed to protect herself. Edwin’s rampage continues with Brandi’s fate sealed in a private room, and Tipsy’s shocking discovery of Valeria’s decapitated friend follows as Edwin’s spree intensifies, culminating in a brutal, off-screen death that leaves the group reeling.

Amid a chaotic display of Seltzer sprays and a deadly prank, Edwin — still unseen by most of the group — doubles down on his plan and tears through the remaining campers. Lenny is mortally wounded in a gruesome moment, and Vinnie’s fate hangs in the balance as chaos ebbs and flows with Edwin’s unpredictable and vicious acts. Crazy Ernie races to warn others, but his attempts end with a fatal collision at Camp Sparkling Lake, leaving the survivors to confront the reality that Edwin is still advancing toward them.

As the tension peaks, Edwin closes in on Valerie and Philbert, slaughtering several of their companions in a knife-and-anger fueled chase through the camp. A brutal confrontation follows, with Valerie and Philbert doing their best to survive as Edwin’s car—miraculously capable of flight—hurtles toward them. Philbert is crushed in a final, heart-stopping moment, and Valerie fights to escape with her life intact, aided by a narrow margin of luck and the stubborn will to survive.

The climax and twist arrive in a shocking revelation: all of the carnage, and even the attempt to create a new carnival of death, was part of a larger TV show called You’ve Been Clown’d!, with Valerie positioned as the obvious winner. The crowd applauds the elaborate ruse as Edwin, revealed to be [Vic Vickers], watches the broadcast from afar, a bitter mix of anger and resolve burning in his eyes. The film closes on Valerie’s catatonic state, institutionalized and overwhelmed by the trauma she endured, while the real Edwin the Clown watches the broadcast and promises revenge on those who staged the torment for a pay-off.
