Set on a mountain slope where North Korean defectors have settled, families eke out a living selling cheap items such as socks and pens. Widower Kim Deok‑sam pressures his son Geo‑buk to enlist in the American army, underscoring a deep divide between parents and children. Next door, Ok‑Mae teaches her daughter Bok‑soon traditional Korean folk songs and pushes her toward a career as a gisaeng.
