Kiki’s Delivery Service

In a world where witches exist alongside humans, a 13-year-old Kiki decides to strike out on her own, bringing along her familiar spirit, a talking black cat named Jiji. Her mother insists she take her mother’s old, reliable broomstick, and soon Kiki lifts off into a cloudless night under a full moon, eager to find a new town to settle in. She soon encounters another witch and her cat, whom she finds pretentious, and their presence makes her question what her own unique “skill” might be. After a shaky start, Kiki discovers the town of Koriko where she accidentally slips through traffic, stirring up a few disruptions. A policeman approaches, but a quick-witted boy named Tombo helps her slip away, sparking the first hints of a new connection.

Setting down roots proves trickier than she imagined, but Kiki presses on, looking for a place to live and work in her new home. She finds the Gutiokipanja bakery, run by Osono and her husband, Fukuo, who are expecting a child. They welcome her warmly and offer a room above the bakery, giving Kiki a place to rest and a sense of belonging she hadn’t anticipated. With new shelter in place, Kiki launches her own business, offering deliveries by broom—what she dubs the Witch Delivery Service. Her first delivery is a small stuffed toy of a black cat that resembles Jiji, meant as a birthday gift for a neighbor’s nephew, Ket. The route presents its own challenges: a gust of wind shoves her off course, and she winds up in a forest crowded with crows that circle and harry her, forcing her to improvise on the fly. In a clever scheme, Jiji pretends to be the toy so Ket can still have his gift, while Kiki works to recover the real one. The plan pays off when she finds the toy in the home of Ursula, a young painter surrounded by crows, who repairs and returns it. With the help of Ket’s dog Jeff, Kiki manages to replace Jiji with the real toy, saving the delivery and their growing friendship.

The next day brings a new kind of invitation: Tombo invites Kiki to visit his aviation club. Yet life’s pace accelerates as her delivery work keeps pulling her away, and a sudden thunderstorm forces her to rethink her plans. Soaking wet, she returns to the bakery and falls ill, only to be cared for by Osono, who helps nurse her back to health. Osono quietly arranges a way for Kiki to reconnect with Tombo by sending a delivery addressed to him, and the encounter that follows — Tombo giving Kiki a quick ride on a homemade flying machine built from a bicycle — begins to deepen their bond. Kiki enjoys the moment but remains wary of Tombo’s circle of friends, who feel distant and hard to read.

As Kiki settles into the rhythms of Koriko, she confronts a deeper sense of emptiness. She finds herself unable to understand Jiji, and she discovers that her flying ability has faded, forcing her to suspend the Witch Delivery Service. This low point is softened by Ursula’s visit, who invites Kiki to her home and helps her see that what she’s experiencing is a form of artist’s block. Ursula advises her to seek a renewed purpose, something that can give shape to her talents even when her powers feel diminished. The encounter sparks a shift in Kiki’s thinking: she relaxes, accepts a pause, and opens up to possibilities beyond simple deliveries.

The turning point arrives through a televised airship crash. Tombo is shown struggling to contain the situation, and Kiki rushes to lend help. She asks for a broom from a local shop and, in a surge of confidence, regains her flying ability just in time to reach the drifting dirigible and rescue Tombo. The moment of triumph reawakens her sense of purpose, and with her powers restored, she resumes her Witch Delivery Service, more confident and capable than before. In a final note of resolution, Kiki writes home to confirm that she and Jiji are happy and that she has found a new balance between her gifts, her independence, and her place in Koriko. The town, the people she has met, and the lessons she has learned all leave her poised for the next chapter of her journey.
