Nate Norman, portrayed by Jonathan Daniel Brown, resides in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, alongside his younger brother and their hardworking single mother, who juggles various jobs to make ends meet. At just 19 years old, Nate has dropped out of high school and spends his days indulging in copious amounts of marijuana with his best friend, Topher Clark, played by Kenny Wormald, a 27-year-old Boston transplant. Frustrated with their status as “nobodies” in a city thriving with wealth, their lives take a thrilling turn when Nate encounters a wealthy playboy while delivering pizzas. This meeting opens the door to a lucrative opportunity involving the smuggling of premium marijuana from Canada.
Driven by curiosity, Nate consults a lawyer about Canadian marijuana laws that prove to be significantly more lenient than those in the US. With newfound hope and little to lose, Nate and Topher set off on an adventure to cross the border. Beginning in Kootenai National Forest, they don camouflage gear and trek toward Canada. Their excitement peaks as they spot a speed limit sign indicating they have crossed over. A brief return to the U.S. allows them to gather funds after selling a salvaged motorboat, giving them a modest startup capital of $1,800.
Their journey to Canada brings a comical yet nerve-wracking encounter with the Border Patrol, leading to full cavity searches. Upon arriving in the border town of Creston, British Columbia, they visit a marijuana dispensary but are promptly warned by a shady individual to back off from any dealings. Undeterred, they end up purchasing lower-quality cannabis for their $1,800 from a suspicious man before realizing it was not what they had aimed for. Despite this setback, the overwhelming demand for BC Bud back home encourages them to persist.
Returning to the U.S. with their questionable goods, they swiftly unload their stash. The experience ignites Nate and Topher’s determination to source better product, leading them to the charming Nicole Grefard, played by Merritt Patterson. During their encounter in Nelson, she offers them greater quantities of quality marijuana from her family’s expansive grow operation, nestled within a serene barn. Nate’s ambitious plan solidifies; he agrees to buy 300 pounds of weed from Nicole’s father, John (played by John C. McGinley), much to Topher’s hesitance.
As their operation grows, Nate seeks funding and approaches the notorious drug kingpin, Barry Lerner, portrayed by Ron Perlman. After a rough start, Barry is convinced of Nate’s potential after sampling the product. He lends Nate $666,000 to secure the massive purchase from the Grefards, albeit with a stern caution against betrayal. Under Nate’s command, a crew of six friends undergoes intense training as they embark on this daring venture into drug smuggling.
Things escalate quickly as Nate enjoys newfound wealth, lavish parties, and extravagant gifts for his family. However, their luck turns when rival dealer, Brendan Butler (played by Aaron Yoo), confronts them at gunpoint, exacerbating tensions. This confrontation leads to a dangerous and explosive birthday bash where Butler attempts to assert his dominance and control over Nate’s operations.
With their success comes peril, as the Mendiola brothers, hired by Butler, attempt to rob Nate and his crew. Despite a fortunate escape, retaliation is imminent, resulting in the tragic demise of Butler—implying that Nate’s hands may not be as clean as they seem.
The thrill of their high-stakes operation culminates in disaster when Topher’s reckless choices lead to their eventual arrest. As pressure mounts from law enforcement, Nate is faced with an agonizing dilemma. In a desperate bid to protect his family, he turns himself in, sacrificing his freedom for the sake of his loved ones.
The film concludes with a poignant reflection on the team’s fate. While all served time, they learn valuable lessons, and Nate is faced with the opportunity to diminish his sentence in exchange for divulging critical information—a temptation he ultimately resists, standing by his principles despite the consequences.
