What Happens at the End of Kantara?

How Kantara (2022) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

In the final confrontation, Shiva learns that the village head Dora has been manipulating the people and planning to seize their land. When the villagers finally turn against Dora, a brutal clash erupts. Though Shiva fights valiantly, Dora manages to wound him mortally, and the hope of the community seems to crumble.

At that moment the ancient forest spirit Panjurli — the god who once protected the tribe—answers Shiva’s lingering nightmares and his earlier visions of a boar. The deity merges with Shiva, granting him supernatural strength. Possessed by the god, Shiva rises, slays Dora and his henchmen, and drives the invaders away, thereby fulfilling the age‑old pact that the forest will guard those who honor it.

Months later the village gathers for the Bhoota Kola festival. Shiva, still bearing the god’s presence, performs the ritual, extending his hand to both the villagers and the forest officials, urging them to safeguard the woods together. As the drums echo, a distant, familiar shriek pierces the night—the call of the forest deity that has always been his father’s spirit. Shiva rushes toward it, reuniting with the god in a circle of fire where both dissolve, their purpose completed.

The film closes with Shiva’s son asking about his father’s disappearance. An enigmatic smile answers him, hinting that the cycle of guardianship may one day call the boy to the same destiny.

Kantara Ending: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about the ending of Kantara (2022): what the final scene means, how the twist works, what happens to each character and how to read the ending. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does the forest spirit Panjurli merge with Shiva at the end?

The forest spirit Panjurli merges with Shiva because Shiva has proven himself worthy of the ancient pact between the tribe and the forest. Throughout the film, Shiva's nightmares and visions of the boar were calls from his father's spirit, who was the previous guardian. When Dora wounds Shiva mortally and the village faces destruction, Shiva's sacrifice fulfills the requirement that the forest will guard those who honor it. The god grants him supernatural strength to defeat the invaders and restore balance.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the film, Shiva experiences recurring nightmares and visions of a boar, which are actually the forest deity calling to him and revealing his ancestral connection.

He then rushes toward the forest deity's call in a circle of fire, where both dissolve together. The final scene shows his son asking about his father, suggesting Shiva has fully merged with the forest spirit and will not return.

What does the ending mean - does Shiva become the forest god?

Yes, Shiva essentially becomes one with the forest deity. The ending shows that Shiva's purpose was to fulfill the ancient pact between his tribe and the forest. After proving his worth through sacrifice, Shiva dissolves with Panjurli in a circle of fire, completing the cycle of guardianship. His father's spirit was the deity all along, and Shiva now joins him as the protector of the forest.

Q5

Why does Shiva's son smile at the end?

Shiva's son smiles at the end because the film hints that the cycle of guardianship will continue. When the boy asks about his father, he receives an enigmatic smile rather than a direct answer. This suggests the boy may one day be called to become the next forest guardian, just as Shiva succeeded his father. The smile implies the heritage passes to the next generation.

This symbolizes the renewal of the ancient pact and community unity after the conflict with Dora.

At the end, when Shiva rushes toward the deity's call in the fire circle, he reunites with his father, and both dissolve together as their purpose is completed. The shriek Shiva hears is his father's spirit welcoming him.

Foreshadowing: Shiva's recurring nightmares about the boar and his mother's hints about his father's mysterious disappearance establish this connection early in the film.
