In Lahore, 1946, Satya Chaudhry receives a devastating cancer diagnosis that forces her to confront the reality of her limited time. This event catalyzes her return to her roots in a small village in Rajputana, where she seeks to settle her affairs.

Satya seeks out her childhood friend Roop to look after her husband, Dev Chaudhry, who is the manager of a progressive newspaper. Understanding the gravity of her situation, she proposes that Roop marry Dev, a decision both friends take with heavy hearts.

After marrying Roop, Dev reveals that his heart belongs to Satya, making it clear that their relationship will remain platonic. This heartbreaking admission deeply affects Roop, trapping her in a loveless marriage.

In search of solace, Roop turns to music and begins learning from Bahaar Begum, the madam of a local brothel. Despite warnings against visiting the brothel, Roop is determined to pursue her passion, pushing boundaries for her own happiness.

Roop begins working at the publishing house run by her husband and expresses her desire to write about the struggles of the local community. This decision is pivotal as it ultimately leads her to cross paths with Zafar, a charismatic blacksmith.

Zafar, motivated by a vendetta against his estranged father Balraj, tricks Roop into falling for him. This manipulative affection complicates Roop's feelings and brings her deeper into a web of conflict involving Dev.

As Roop develops a bond with both Zafar and Dev, political unrest looms over the community. Zafar fuels hatred against Dev and Balraj, exploiting local tensions to further his revenge against his father.

Balraj notices the escalating turmoil in the community and warns Dev to proceed with caution. However, Dev, committed to using his newspaper for progress, remains undeterred in the face of growing hostility.

As the political situation deteriorates, communal violence erupts. Balraj confronts Zafar, leading to a tense moment where Zafar claims Roop's heart belongs to him, intensifying the conflict further.

Caught in a web of chaos, Roop ultimately consummates her marriage with Dev despite lingering feelings for Zafar. This decision leads to heartache as Zafar, realizing the futility of their situation, sends her away.

In an attempt to flee the violence in Lahore, Roop and Zafar face horrific events when Saroj, a compassionate maid, is brutally attacked during a riot. This encounter starkly highlights the peril they are in.

Amidst the chaos, Roop and Zafar confront their feelings for one another while trying to save Dev from a mob. This situation escalates tragically when Zafar is murdered by Abdul as Roop and Dev fight for their survival.

A decade later, Roop and Dev find themselves in a joyless marriage, haunted by their traumatic experiences. They recount their past horrors to a journalist named Aditya, revealing that their story remains unfinished.
