Jurassic Park follows an ambitious industrialist who creates a theme park populated with living dinosaurs on Isla Nublar, a tropical island off Costa Rica. After a dangerous incident involving a Velociraptor, the investors demand reassurance about safety, pushing the park’s backers to bring in experts. A renowned chaos theorist, a paleontologist, and a paleobotanist arrive to evaluate the operation, and they are astonished by the sight of towering, living giants like the Brachiosaurus and Parasaurolophus. The genesis of these creatures is explained: dinosaur DNA was extracted from prehistoric mosquitoes trapped in amber, with frog DNA and other genetic clues used to fill in the gaps. To prevent uncontrolled breeding, the dinosaurs were made female through chromosome manipulation.
Early on, the group encounters a baby Velociraptor during a tour and later tour a raptor enclosure, prompting discussions over the ethics of cloning and the responsibility that comes with resurrecting extinct species. A tense lunch conversation explores the potential consequences of genetic engineering, while questions about whether humans and dinosaurs can share the same world loom large. Hammond’s grandchildren, Lex and Tim, join the visitors for a guided ride in two self-driving electric Ford Explorer tour vehicles, supervised by Hammond from the control room. Although a grand spectacle is promised, the day is marked by misfires—many dinosaurs stay hidden—until the group encounters a sick Triceratops. A tropical storm soon interrupts the tour, forcing the visitors back to the railed paths as employees depart for the mainland.
Behind the scenes, the park’s disgruntled lead programmer is bribed by a rival corporate figure to steal frozen dinosaur embryos. He sabotages the security system, stashing the embryos inside a can of shaving cream, and his actions trigger a cascade of failures. The power outage strands the tour vehicles near the Tyrannosaurus paddock, and most of the electric fences go down, allowing the towering predator to roam freely. The Tyrannosaurus attacks and kills Donald Gennaro and injures Ian Malcolm as Alan Grant, Lex, and Tim scramble to escape.
As the storm rages, Sattler and Muldoon join the search for survivors, eventually locating Malcolm as the dangerous dinosaur returns. Grant, Tim, and Lex seek safety in treetops and later discover the broken eggshells of other dinosaurs, suggesting that reproduction is possible thanks to amphibian DNA’s quirks—an unsettling reminder of nature’s resilience. The trio then witnesses a Gallimimus stampede under the predatory gaze of the Tyrannosaurus.
Unable to decipher Nedry’s security-reboot code, Hammond and the chief engineer decide to restart the park’s systems from a remote location. The group withdraws to an emergency bunker while the engineer heads off to complete the reboot. The plan goes awry when the maintenance work is interrupted, and the release of the Velociraptors turns the facility into a deadly maze. Sattler and Muldoon scramble to keep ahead of the predators; one raptor is evaded in the kitchen, another closes in, and Arnold’s severed arm is discovered as the power returns to reveal the danger in the control room.
Grant, Tim, and Lex reach the visitor center, while Grant searches for Sattler. The raptors close in, pursuing the trio through the building; they manage to escape by barricading one in a freezer and rejoin Grant and Sattler. With the park’s systems restored, they reach Hammond, who calls for extraction. The final act sees the last of the dangerous raptors confronted by the Tyrannosaurus, which arrives in time to kill the raptors and save the group. The film ends with Hammond and Malcolm arriving to evacuate by helicopter, while Grant and Hammond decide to avoid endorsing the park, choosing prudence over spectacle. The story leaves a cautious note on humanity’s hubris and its uneasy coexistence with nature’s ancient powers.
