Through a series of vignettes, seventh‑graders and their biology teacher, Matulka—an ageing substitute too conscientious to take his final exam—navigate mischief. After a prank with popping beads leaves Matulka ill, his pupils, aided by a professor who once studied under him, stage a ruse, pretending to buy specimens to bring Matulka to Professor Vondrák for the exam.
