Sandy Edwards, portrayed by Toni Collette, is a director at a geological software company based in Perth, Western Australia. Her business partner cleverly persuades her to serve as a guide for Hiromitsu Tachibana, a Japanese businessman, as he visits mines in the Pilbara desert with the hope that he will consider purchasing their software. However, upon his arrival, Hiromitsu, played by Gotaro Tsunashima, treats Sandy more like a chauffeur than a guide, focusing more on his own journey of self-discovery in the wilderness rather than the software.
Initially frustrated by Hiromitsu’s aloof and demanding nature, Sandy finds herself increasingly irritated when he spends more time on his phone chatting with friends back in Japan than engaging with her during their first venture into the desert. He pushes her to drive further off-course, which ultimately leads to their vehicle becoming stuck in the unforgiving sand. After several failed attempts to free themselves, including digging a dead man anchor, their winch experiences a malfunction. When Sandy suggests using Hiromitsu’s phone to call for help, he adamantly refuses, leaving them no choice but to spend the night stranded together.
As dawn breaks, Hiromitsu, now aware of the danger his decision has caused, rises early and ingeniously creates a track of sticks to help them maneuver the vehicle out of the sand. Success in this task shatters the ice between them, transforming their relationship from tension to friendship as they find solace in their isolation, without the distractions of work. A passionate encounter ensues later at a motel, but the joy is short-lived when Sandy discovers Hiromitsu’s hidden life—a wife and children back in Japan.
Continuing their journey, they share intimate moments and kiss, eventually culminating in another passionate night together. However, a tragic turn occurs when Sandy takes a dip in a nearby swimming hole, only for Hiromitsu to dive in after her without realizing the water’s depth, leading to his accidental drowning. In sheer disbelief at his sudden death, Sandy finds herself in a frantic panic, pulling his lifeless body from the water and into their vehicle. She drives for hours to reach the nearest town, struggling to comprehend the grim reality of her experiences.
Once back in Perth, Sandy is faced with the haunting reality of Hiromitsu’s demise, which starkly contrasts with the vivid memories of their time together. Her life takes another turn when she encounters his grieving widow, Yukiko. The encounter forces Sandy to confront the complexity of Hiromitsu’s life, revealing new layers of understanding about the brief yet profound connection they shared.
