In 3600 BC, En Sabah Nur, known as the first mutant, reigns over ancient Egypt with formidable powers. As he confronts the reality of his declining health, Nur ponders the necessary steps to maintain his immortality.

Facing death, Nur conducts a ritual to transfer his consciousness into a younger mutant's body. He hopes to gain the healing factor he seeks, but the ceremony is interrupted by betrayal.

Conspirators cut off sunlight, fatally disrupting the ceremony and resulting in the death of Nur's followers. As the pyramid collapses around him, Nur is entombed, while a loyal follower secures his new body.

In 1983, a cult loyal to Nur locates his tomb and accidentally awakens him by shining sunlight upon it. Upon emerging, Nur feels that humanity has lost its way and sets out to reclaim his vision for the world.

Nur enlists the help of Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm, amplifying her weather-manipulating abilities to assist in his quest. Together, they begin to gather more mutants to form his Horsemen.
