The film unfolds in 1900, in the lush hills of Munnar under the shadow of the British Raj, and is framed by the voice of a communist leader as the narrator. Sal Yusuf plays Harrison, a British tea planter who arrives with grand plans and an eye for opportunity. He spots a bright, capable worker among his laborers and names him Iyob, Lal, who becomes a kind of protégé and surrogate son in his expanding world. Harrison’s life is torn between ambition, affection, and the harsh realities of power, and Iyob quickly becomes central to how that power is exercised on the plantation.

Harrison’s personal life is as stormy as his business is prosperous. His wife deserts him and returns to England, a rupture that changes the dynamic of life in Munnar. Yet Harrison’s attention is soon drawn to Kazhali, a woman whose presence unsettles the uneasy peace of the household. Kazhali, Lenaa, enters the story as a figure of desire and danger, and Harrison’s curiosity grows as he fumbles through loyalties, relationships, and the social code of the time. The danger intensifies when Harrison discovers Kazhali’s connection with Thacho, one of his trusted servants, leading him to issue a brutal order: Iyob should kill Thacho. The pressure of this order weighs heavily on Iyob, who confronts Thacho, but Thacho takes a fatal tumble from a cliff, dying in a moment that will haunt everyone involved.

After Thacho’s death, Harrison makes Kazhali his mistress, and she becomes pregnant, altering the power balance within the household and the broader web of loyalties that bind the characters. The story shifts as World War I disrupts Harrison’s tea empire; his enterprise wanes, and he heads back to Britain, dying on the voyage to Cochin with only the whispers of unfinished business and greed accompanying his last days. With Harrison gone, Iyob exploits the moment, tossing Kazhali out of the house and using a power of attorney to seize Harrison’s assets, stepping further into the role of the puppet master behind the public life of Munnar.

Annamma, Kazhali’s counterpart in this intricate web, meets Kazhali secretly. Annamma, Reenu Mathews, does so without her husband’s knowledge and discovers that Kazhali already has a daughter, Martha, with a young, kind-hearted man named Aloshy. Annamma also takes Kazhali’s youngest son, Aloshy, into her care. Martha, who grows up as an intimate friend of Aloshy, becomes a compass of tenderness and hope in a landscape filled with power struggles and betrayals. The two children—Martha and Aloshy—form a bond that feels both like a sanctuary and a rebellion against their shared fate.

Iyob’s world splits into rivalries and alliances as his three sons—Dimitri, Ivan, and Aloshy—enter the scene. Dimitri and Ivan inherit their father’s ruthlessness, while Aloshy embodies something gentler and more just, much like his mother. Aloshy’s closest companions are Chemban, Vinayakan, and Martha, whose loyalty and affection anchor him through turbulent times. The tragedy that sets the future in motion arrives when Chemban’s parents are killed in a fire set by Aloshy’s family as a brutal act born of illness and pain; the event casts a long shadow over all the siblings and reshapes loyalties for years to come. Aloshy, witness to the murder and the cruelty that follows, leaves home as a child, seeking a life that might resist the cycles of vengeance and greed that grip Munnar.

Years pass, and Aloshy’s path leads him to Cochin, where he joins the Royal Indian Navy and becomes an officer, fighting in battles that echo the larger struggle for Indian independence. His service hardens him, but the mutiny of 1946 forces a reckoning with the past as he returns to Munnar, where the present tense again collides with the old wounds. Iyob’s grip on power begins to crumble as his sons’ ambitions pull him into alliances with Angoor Rawther, a wealthy Tamil merchant, and the old resentments resurface with a new force. The clash rekindles when Dimitri and Ivan attempt to kill Aloshy, but Aloshy survives and fights back, aided by Chemban and his family.

In the maelstrom that follows, Rahel, Padmapriya Janakiraman, emerges as a key figure. She is the daughter of Thacho, and her hunger for revenge grows as she discovers the truth about her father’s fate and the tangled deception surrounding Kazhali, Iyob, and the others. Rahel’s calculation leads her to make a dangerous pact with Angoor, intertwining vengeance with ambition as she navigates love, power, and payback.

As the strands collide, Aloshy and Martha rediscover each other and escape from looming danger—first from Iyob’s collapse of order, then from the combined schemes of Dimitri, Ivan, Angoor, and their cohorts. The pursuit crescendos in a violent and brutal confrontation on the edge of the forest where loyalties fray and old wounds threaten to do lasting damage. Angoor, aided by his henchmen, presses hard, but a final turn of fate shifts the balance: Aloshy defeats the conspirators one by one, Chemban and his own courage standing beside him. In a dramatic moment of reckoning, Rahel’s plan to seize power collapses as she meets a tragic end of her own choosing, a suicide that declares the end of her arc and mirrors the devastation that has marked so many lives.

The film’s final act returns to the framing voice—the narrator—who notes the political upheaval of the era: the Emergency has been declared in India, and many communist leaders are placed under preventive custody. In this moment of national crisis, the story’s personal revolutions crystallize into a larger moral statement. Aloshy and Martha, having survived so much, choose to leave Munnar behind and seek a life defined by honesty, compassion, and a shared sense of independence. The narrator’s closing reflection suggests that people like Aloshy—the ones who strive to do right in the face of entrenched power—could make life for the common people far better than it is in the present moment.

This sprawling, multi-generational saga weaves together romance, rebellion, tragedy, and resilience. It asks hard questions about loyalty, justice, and the costs of autonomy in a world where wealth and influence are concentrated in the hands of a few. It also paints a vivid portrait of a hill country under siege by ambition, where every action—whether born of love or anger—reverberates through the generations, reshaping destinies and redefining what it means to be free. The result is a richly textured meditation on power, memory, and the stubborn hope that kindness can endure even in the most fractured of times.
