What Happens in It’s Trad, Dad!: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of It’s Trad, Dad! (1962) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Craig Craig Douglas and Helen Helen Shapiro are teenagers who share a love for the newest wave in traditional jazz, a scene that stirs excitement among their group of friends. But the mood is not shared by everyone: the local mayor Felix Felton and a crowd of adults oppose the trend and move to silence the jukebox in the coffee shop.

With the help of an omniscient narrator Deryck Guyler as Narrator, Craig and Helen start a quest to find a disc jockey and organize a show aimed at popularizing the music. Their pursuit takes them into nightclubs, TV studios, and recording companies, places where the music lives and breathes. They eventually meet disc jockey Pete Murray and persuade him to participate and to help line up several jazz bands to perform on the program. Murray enlists two other deejays, David Jacobs and Alan Freeman, to join the lineup and bring more energy to the event.

The mayor, alerted to the plan, tries to stop the performers by any means, attempting to derail their bus and the whole undertaking. As the day of the show arrives, the expected performers are delayed; Craig and Helen step onto the stage themselves and win a warm reception from the crowd, proving the music can shine even without the original lineup. The bands’ bus, facing a series of obstacles set up by the local police, manages to dodge the hindrances and arrives just in time to perform for the BBC television cameras.

In the end, the film concludes with a jubilant celebration of the music, as the audience—including the mayor—joins in and the credit for a successful show is shared among all who helped bring the plan to life.
