Twelve‑year‑old Isabel and her mother, a renowned political singer, flee Chile after the 1973 coup, leaving her father to fight underground. For six years they live in an East Berlin apartment block where neighbors initially welcome them but later grow distant. Isabel feels alienated; even her friendship with Philip, the neighbor’s son, cannot ease her longing. She spends each day on the stairs waiting for a long‑awaited letter from her father.
