Iris Doriot, a stylish Parisian, persuades Max Lopez, a debt-ridden mechanic, to help her escape her marriage by staging a kidnapping. She outlines the plan and offers him a stake in the ransom once it succeeds. Max agrees after fixing her car and sensing a potentially life-changing payout.

After lunch with her husband, Iris disappears from the street and goes into hiding in an empty flat she has been watching for a friend. She prepares to wait out the days while Max arranges the ruse. The stage is set for the fake abduction.

Max binds Iris at the flat and takes a photograph to send to her husband, along with a demand for 500,000 euros. The image and message signal the start of the ransom plot. Iris remains under constraint as they push the scheme forward.

Antoine calls the police, and detectives Nathalie and Malek begin monitoring the train station area where the ransom money would be exchanged. The investigation takes shape around the staged kidnapping. They begin to connect suspects tied to the bank and Max's background.

Max watches a news report about Iris Doriot's disappearance and realizes the image shown is not the woman he knew. In a panic, he digs up the woods grave and discovers the body matches the TV image, confirming a startling discrepancy.

The woman Max believed to be Iris arrives at the bank; her name is revealed to be Claudia. Antoine explains they have set Max up and implies that if Max takes blame for Iris's death, his debt could be wiped clean. Claudia fears exposure as the ruse tightens.

A flashback reveals Iris followed Antoine to a high-end S&M session, where she attacked Claudia. Claudia kills Iris in self-defense and becomes the impersonator behind the fake kidnapping. The backstory explains the origin of the identity swap.

The next morning, Max and Claudia part ways, dividing the ransom money between them. The scheme has collapsed into a fatal culmination, leaving both of them with the remains of their deception. The film closes on a note of uneasy separation and the cost of deception.
