The film opens as a young woman named Iris (Molly Gordon) opens the door for her friend Max (Geraldine Viswanathan). Iris is panicking and Max asks what is wrong. She shows Max that she has handcuffed her boyfriend Isaac (Logan Lerman) to the bed. 33 hours earlier, Isaac and Iris are seen heading on a romantic weekend getaway to High Falls (which Iris mistakenly reads as “O’High Falls” because an O from the “welcome to” part had come loose). They stop at a strawberry stand, where Isaac and the vendor appear to be flirting with one another, which Iris notices. After buying two packs, Isaac offers to drive the rest of the way, and ends up driving into the strawberry cart. They end up leaving with many more strawberries. The two arrive at a rental house, which is near a lake. Isaac and Iris take a tip in the lake and are spotted by nosy neighbor Steve (David Cross), who tells them not to have sex in the lake. Isaac later cooks dinner for Iris, and the two share a dance outside. As the night goes on, the two come across the belongings of the house’s owners, specifically some bondage gear. The two have sex, with Iris cuffing Isaac to the bed. After finishing, Iris is in a lovestruck state and comments on how they are doing romantic couple things. The mood is destroyed when Isaac responds that not only is he not looking for a relationship, he has also been sleeping with other women. As a result, Iris leaves him cuffed. Iris goes to the car and speaks to her mother (Polly Draper) before deciding to try and talk it out with Isaac, but he has fallen asleep. She spends the night listening to a dating guru for advice. In the morning, Iris vows to get Isaac to let him decide after 12 hours if he does or does not want to be with her. Iris attempts to cook breakfast. She goes next door to ask Steve for an egg, and he apologizes for coming off the way he did earlier. Iris cooks a funny-looking breakfast for Isaac and tries to spend the day connecting with him emotionally, but he doesn’t want to hear it. Even when he needs to go to the bathroom, Iris just makes him pee in a bowl while she holds his penis. There appears to be a breakthrough after Iris does a dance from school, and she and Isaac start bonding over a conversation. It gets derailed when Isaac calls Iris crazy and accuses her of being capable of stabbing him, so he demands to be uncuffed. Iris calls for Max to show up, but Iris is annoyed to find out that Max came with her boyfriend Kenny (John Reynolds). Max freaks out upon seeing Isaac, whom Iris has now placed with a ball gag in his mouth. Despite trying to keep him hidden from Kenny, Max lets it slip. The three then try to figure out what to do, as Iris technically has Isaac kidnapped, and Max and Kenny are now accessories. Isaac later gets more annoyed when Iris brings Kenny and Max into the bedroom to eat dinner. He refuses to eat for concern that Iris might poison him. Max gets in touch with her cousin, who claims to be a witch. They give her a recipe for a witch’s brew to get Isaac to drink and erase his memory of what has happened. They use Kenny to try to convince him to drink it since he would be suspicious with one of the ladies. Iris and Max then disrobe and perform a witchy ritual outside to ensure that the potion to work. A flashback is shown of one of Isaac and Iris’s dates. She shows up crying after a bad day, but he comforts her and they kiss. Isaac then appears to be uncuffed and goes outside to find Iris has set up something romantic for them. She sings “Islands in the Stream” to him before telling him she hates him. Isaac wakes up, still cuffed to the bed but with seemingly no memory of the last two days. After thinking everything is okay, Iris agrees to uncuff Isaac. He makes an excuse to go to the car and ends up fleeing the house since he overheard the plan from the night before. Max and Kenny try to get Iris to go after Isaac as it is pouring rain, but she goes to bed depressed at thinking she made Isaac run away. When Iris wakes up from a nap, she gets a phone call from the local sheriff, who says that her car was found crashed against a tree, but Isaac was not in it. She starts to head out with Max and Kenny until they run into Steve again. Iris asks if he has any idea where Isaac could be, and Steve suggests somewhere in the woods. Iris runs off and finds Isaac, who says that the car hydroplaned and crashed, and he tried to get help but injured himself and fell, and is unable to walk. As they wait for help to arrive, Iris and Isaac finally have a heart-to-heart over the state of their relationship and mutually agree that they should not be together. The ambulance comes to take Isaac away while Iris stays behind. As the ambulance drives away, it passes a sign that confirms the town is indeed called “High Falls”.
