What Happens in Initial D: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Initial D (2005) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Takumi Fujiwara is a typical high school student with an extraordinary secret. By day, he works in his father Bunta's gas station and delivers tofu to resorts nestled in the scenic Mount Akina, driving a Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86. However, beneath his unassuming exterior lies a burgeoning passion for street racing, inspired by his best friend Itsuki, the gas station owner's son, who dreams of becoming a formidable street racer himself. The plot thickens as Takumi is drawn into a world filled with adrenaline, impressive cars, and complicated relationships.

His crush, Natsuki Mogi, brings a twist to his life—a captivating classmate who catches his eye but harbors a hidden life as an escort, romantically intertwined with a wealthy man who drives a luxurious Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Meanwhile, street racing heats up as notable racers like the skilled Takeshi Nakazato from the NightKids, navigating a powerful Nissan Skyline GT-R VSpec II R32, and the strategic Ryousuke Takahashi of the RedSuns in his Mazda Savanna RX-7 Type-R FC, prepare to showcase their talents on the famed Akina circuit.

An encounter at the gas station turns competitive when Takeshi issues a challenge to the streets of Akina. Although Takumi rides alongside Itsuki on this thrilling venture to protect the title of the racing god, things take a turn when Itsuki suffers an embarrassing defeat, wrecking his car in the process. To everyone's surprise, Takumi steps up and shows his hidden talent by defeating Takeshi in an unofficial match. This sparks curiosity among the racers about who truly owns the AE86, eventually leading them to discover that Takumi has been quietly honing his racing skills for five years under the watchful eye of his father, Anthony Wong.

Bunta, recognizing his son's potential, agrees to let Takumi take the AE86 out for a beach date with Natsuki, provided he wins the racing showdown at Akina. Takumi triumphs over Takeshi in a thrilling downhill race, celebrating a successful day with Natsuki. Under his guidance, he begins to teach Itsuki how to race in the AE86, but when Kenji Iwaki from the Emperor team provokes them, Takumi's temper flares, leading to another victory against Seiji and a damaged Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV GSR.

Throughout this racing journey, Takumi learns that his father's AE86 is custom-tuned compared to Itsuki's outdated car. He agrees to challenge Ryousuke in three weeks, but their rivals from the Emperor team don't make things easy. After a dramatic encounter where the AE86 suffers engine troubles, Ryousuke wisely offers to lend Takumi one of his superior cars, but Takumi remains resolute in facing his own issues. With plans from Bunta to modify the AE86, Takumi pushes himself to adapt to the stronger vehicle despite feeling the pressure of Natsuki's absence.

The emotional turmoil escalates when Itsuki reveals Natsuki's relationship with the Mercedes driver, leading to a heated confrontation between the friends. Shortly before the major race, Takumi becomes distraught upon seeing Natsuki accompanied by the affluent driver after presumably spending time at a hotel; their relationship becomes a test of loyalty and self-worth.

During the climactic race, Ryousuke proposes a temporary partnership to take down Kyoichi, yet Takumi's independence leads him to decline. In an intense showdown filled with strategy, technique, and miscalculation, Ryousuke allows Kyoichi to pass, setting the stage to exploit weaknesses during the run. As tension peaks and racing skills are pushed to the limit, Kyoichi's attempts to reclaim his title sadly end in disaster as he loses control of his Evo III, leading to a devastating crash.

In a nail-biting finish, Takumi manages to overtake Ryousuke during the final hairpin turn, showcasing not only his growth as a racer but allowing him to carve his path ahead. Despite the victory, Takumi feels the weight of his personal life, and upon confronting Natsuki one last time, the two are left stranded in heartache when their paths diverge over unresolved feelings and societal expectations.

In an ironic twist, Takumi’s acceptance of Ryousuke’s invitation to join his new racing project (Project D), signifies not just his commitment to racing but the bittersweet realization of leaving behind the relationship that might have defined him beyond the race.

Initial D Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Initial D (2005): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

How did delivering tofu make Takumi such a skilled racer?

Takumi honed his driving skills over five years by making daily tofu deliveries along the winding, technical roads of Mount Akina in the AE86. Each run demanded precise cornering, consistent speed, and total control to keep the tofu intact, effectively turning the mundane job into thousands of hours of high-level practice without him realizing it.

Foreshadowing: Bunta had Takumi drive the AE86 for tofu deliveries as a teenager, quietly building the foundation for his later racing dominance.

  • tofu delivery
  • ae86 driving skills
  • bunta training
Q2

Why did Itsuki lose so badly to Takeshi at the gas station?

Itsuki lacked both the experience and the proper equipment to compete with Takeshi, a seasoned member of the NightKids driving a Nissan Skyline GT-R. His over-eagerness to protect Akina's reputation led him to accept a challenge he wasn't prepared for, resulting in a wreck that exposed how far behind he really was.

  • itsuki defeat
  • takeshi nakazato
  • nightkids
  • gas station race
Q3

Who is the Mercedes driver that Natsuki is secretly seeing?

Natsuki is romantically involved with an older, wealthy man who drives a luxurious Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and her hidden life as an escort for him is the reason their relationship can never be public.

Foreshadowing: Early hints about Natsuki's unusual schedule and quiet phone calls subtly foreshadow her double life before Itsuki confirms it.

  • natsuki mogi
  • mercedes driver
  • escort secret
  • wealthy boyfriend
Q4

Why did Bunta agree to let Takumi use the AE86 for the beach date?

Bunta made a conditional deal: Takumi could take Natsuki out in the AE86 only if he won a race at Akina. It was a deliberate push from his father to motivate Takumi, test his composure under pressure, and reward victory rather than raw enthusiasm.

  • bunta
  • beach date
  • ae86 deal
  • akina race motivation
Q5

What caused the AE86's engine breakdown against Kyoichi?

The AE86's engine finally gave out under the strain of Kyoichi's Evo III pushing it past its mechanical limits during a high-speed practice run. Rather than continue on a dying engine, Takumi wisely backed off, exposing the gap between his stock engine and the modified cars of the Emperor team.

Foreshadowing: Bunta had already been planning upgrades, knowing the stock engine would not survive a full season of serious racing.

  • ae86 engine failure
  • kyoichi sudo
  • emperor team
  • engine blow up
Q6

Why did Ryosuke deliberately let Kyoichi pass during the final race?

Ryosuke's strategy was to let Kyoichi believe he had the advantage so Kyoichi would push harder and overdrive into mistakes. It was a calculated trap to expose Kyoichi's weaknesses and tire his car before the decisive hairpin, where Takumi could capitalize.

Foreshadowing: Ryosuke's reputation as a strategic racer was established earlier when he offered to lend Takumi a faster car instead of relying on raw power.

  • ryosuke takahashi
  • redsuns strategy
  • final race tactics

Q7

Why did Kyoichi crash his Evo III in the final showdown?

Kyoichi lost control after Ryosuke baited him into overextending on the course, exploiting the Evo III's instability when pushed beyond its grip. Combined with Kyoichi's frustration at losing the lead, his aggressive driving pushed the car past its traction limits, sending him into a devastating crash.

Foreshadowing: Kyoichi's reckless passing maneuvers earlier in the race hinted at his tendency to overdrive under pressure.

  • kyoichi crash
  • evo iii accident
  • emperor team crash
  • akina final race
Q8

Why did Takumi refuse Ryosuke's temporary partnership against Kyoichi?

Takumi's pride and independence drove him to win on his own terms rather than coast behind Ryosuke's plan, reflecting the core theme of the film that real growth comes from facing challenges alone.

Foreshadowing: Takumi had earlier refused Ryosuke's offer to borrow a faster car, signaling his commitment to mastering the AE86 on its own merits.

  • takumi pride
  • ryosuke partnership
  • independent racing
  • project d setup
Q9

Why does Takumi accept Ryosuke's invitation to Project D?

After winning the climactic race and realizing his potential as a professional-level driver, Takumi sees Project D as the natural next step to keep growing against stronger opponents. It also marks his acceptance that his future lies on the racing roads of Akina and beyond, rather than stuck in the same routine.

Q10

What happens between Takumi and Natsuki after the final race?

Takumi is devastated when he sees Natsuki leaving a hotel with the wealthy Mercedes driver, confirming the relationship Itsuki had revealed. Their confrontation ends without resolution, and Takumi drives off alone, leaving their connection suspended between heartbreak and acceptance.

Foreshadowing: Itsuki's earlier warning about Natsuki's secret life primed the scene, and Bunta's quiet presence hinted he already understood the outcome.

  • natsuki ending
  • takumi heartbreak
  • mercedes driver reveal
  • bittersweet ending
Q11

How does the AE86 compete with faster, more powerful cars like the GT-R and Evo?

The AE86 is outgunned on horsepower, but Takumi uses its light weight, rear-wheel-drive balance, and exceptional tire grip to his advantage on technical downhill courses. His five years of tofu runs taught him every inch of Akina, letting him carry more speed through corners than the heavier, AWD cars.

Foreshadowing: Bunta's custom upgrades to the AE86 showed early on that the car's strength was setup and balance, not raw power.

  • ae86 vs gtr
  • ae86 vs evo
  • ae86 advantage
  • lightweight drift car
Q12

Why does Takumi start teaching Itsuki to drive the AE86?

After watching his friend take embarrassing defeats, Takumi wants to give Itsuki real skills rather than let him keep crashing out of pride. Teaching Itsuki also cements Takumi's role as the group's true racer while honoring the friendship that first pulled him into the scene.
