After Octavian’s death, Illyrian and Pannonian rebels threaten the Roman Empire. Tribune Marcus Ventidius is sent to quell the uprising; he captures chief Magdus and women hostages, among them Magdus’s daughter Helen, promised to Illyrian warrior Batone. Julia, the governor’s daughter, loves Marcus and, jealous of his concern for Helen, plots to free her and her father. Marcus pursues them, crossing a mountain pass where Batone has set a trap.
