Jessica’s history in this house is marked by a traumatic incident involving her father, Ben, which resulted in scars on her arms and a sense of lingering dread. Despite Jessica’s success and stability as an author, her past seems to seep into her present, hinting at the possibility that old demons haven’t fully stayed in the past.

The story takes a darker turn with Alice, who talks about her imaginary friend, a teddy bear called Chauncey. Alice often communes with him in secret, and the audience witnesses her following the voice in the house to a hidden space where she discovers her strange, talking teddy bear. Meanwhile, Taylor notices a mysterious woman named Gloria, who is played by Betty Buckley. Gloria claims to have been Jessica’s babysitter in childhood and seems to hold secrets about Jessica’s history in the house, though Jessica struggles to remember her.

That night, Jessica overhears Alice engaging in a tea party with Chauncey, but things grow unnerving when Jessica hears Alice speaking to someone who responds, “Thank you,” with no one else visible. Jessica’s attempts to investigate her past bring her to Ben at the nursing home, where he is in a fragile state. Her visit there becomes chaotic when Ben, overwhelmed and hysterical, seizes her wrist and causes her pain, prompting her to leave. Tensions escalate as Taylor introduces Liam, a neighbor boy, to Alice, which results in mischief involving drugs and a broken liquor bottle. Liam’s behavior becomes increasingly disturbing as the teddy bear, Chauncey, appears to come to life—pulling on a string that makes a haunting tune, then transforming into a monstrous version of himself, terrifying Liam and Jessica alike.

Jessica begins noticing disturbing changes to her environment—certain drawings she made as a child have had their heads cut out, and she uncovers evidence that Alice talks to Chauncey in secret. She confronts Alice, and through a heartfelt conversation, she begins to understand her daughter’s emotional turmoil stemming from her mother’s past trauma. An encounter with a psychologist, Dr. Soto, reveals that Alice’s interactions with Chauncey might be linked to a deeper, more sinister influence. To Jessica’s shock, Dr. Soto’s footage shows that neither she nor Alice can physically see Chauncey, suggesting that the teddy bear might only exist in their perception.

The situation worsens when Alice suddenly disappears, and Jessica, along with Taylor, ventures into the streets searching for her. Taylor, feeling betrayed and overwhelmed, blames Jessica for the chaos. During their search, Taylor learns horrifying truths from Gloria—who reveals that her own childhood had similar experiences with her imaginary friend, Chauncey, which led her father to madness and injury. As Jessica uncovers a drawing of a place called the “Never Ever,” a dark world born from children’s imaginations, she realizes they must confront their pasts head-on to save Alice.

The trio gathers items from Jessica’s childhood and begins the dangerous ritual to open the door to the “Never Ever,” a liminal space where their fears and memories are amplified. Jessica sacrifices her hand with scissors to activate the ritual, channeling her pain to unlock the world inside the imaginary realm. Inside, they confront a horrifying version of the house from Jessica’s childhood, where Ben’s last stand against Chauncey took place, and encounter visions of her past and her father’s madness—guilt and trauma intertwined.

In the depths of the “Never Ever,” they find Alice, dressed as a princess, in a room resembling Jessica’s old apartment. Jessica and Taylor must convince Alice that her surroundings are illusions and that it’s safe to leave. As they prepare to escape, Chauncey, now in his monstrous spider form, manifests with murderous intent. Jessica fights to protect her daughters, stabbing him in the eye to free herself. As they escape through a door, the creature’s fury results in a fiery chaos that consumes the house, sealing Chauncey’s evil behind flames and smoke.

In the aftermath, Jessica, Taylor, and Alice attempt to move on, checking into a hotel. However, they notice a teddy bear peeking out behind a chair—belonging to another child with an imaginary friend named Rufus—indicating that Chauncey’s influence may not be completely gone. The film closes with this ominous detail, suggesting that the cycle of fear and the power of children’s imaginations still linger, waiting to ensnare the next victim.
