Lasky sent Morgan, who had survived the initial carriage attack, to eliminate Sartana because Sartana had become a threat to the entire operation. After Morgan failed to kill Sartana in the first attack, Lasky partnered with him and ordered the hit to remove the gunslinger who was disrupting the criminal scheme. The failed assassination attempt confirmed Sartana's superior firepower and resolve.

Morgan's escape from the initial attack on the elderly couple established him as a surviving adversary who would return.

Lasky's dynamite trap backfired because his own gang turned on him. After tracking Sartana to the cabin near the massacre site, Lasky planned to trap him there.
