Eighteen-year-old Michael Corben from Detroit is introduced as a handsome but wayward young man who spends more time drinking and partying than studying. Facing graduation with only a French credit missing, he learns that his only path to receive his diploma is to join the French teacher, Mrs. Grober, and the French Club on a summer trip to France, where he must participate to earn the necessary credit.

At the airport, a CIA agent named Michael Corben—whose mission details are tightly guarded—meets an abrupt end when he’s killed by the assassin Ilsa Grunt. This fatal event sets off a path of mistaken identity: the civilian Michael is treated as the fallen agent, boarded first class on the flight to Paris, and swiftly whisked away by British Intelligence. What follows is a covert game of shadows, as the real purpose of the mission remains obscured and the passenger’s life hangs in the balance.

The deceased agent’s task had been to shield Augustus Steranko, a figure who initially appears unthreatening but is revealed to be a cunning mastermind intent on seizing Europe’s gold to mint his own coins under a questionable currency scheme. With crucial identity details kept secret, Michael finds himself playing along, lured by the glamorous perks of spy life: high-tech gadgets like X-ray glasses, exploding chewing gum, and LA Gear sneakers with suction cups, plus the thrill of a Lotus Esprit. The excitement quickly gives way to peril as Steranko’s assassins close in, including Zigesfeld, a henchman with a prosthetic gold hand, and Areola Canasta, who wields a venomous pet scorpion to dispatch her victims.

Meanwhile, Steranko seizes Michael’s teacher and classmates, holding them hostage at a remote castle stronghold and forcing Michael into action. He teams up with a girl his own age named Mariska—the daughter of Agent Blade, who was murdered by Steranko—to mount a rescue, save his friends, and secure Europe’s gold. Michael faces moments of capture and imprisonment, but he manages to break free, rescue Mrs. Grober and the others, and defeat Zigesfeld in a high-stakes showdown.

The climax comes as Steranko abducts Mariska and makes a grab for the gold, fleeing in a Eurocopter Ecureuil helicopter. Michael stages a daring rescue, and Steranko is killed when he falls from the helicopter, with the gold crashing down alongside him. In the aftermath, Mrs. Grober agrees to grant Michael the French credit he needs, sealing his graduation and bringing an end to Steranko’s dangerous scheme. Throughout, the undercurrent of danger mixes with the unexpected perks of espionage, creating a story that blends teen ambition with globe-trotting intrigue.
