Idi Katha Kaadu (1979) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Idi Katha Kaadu (1979), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened, and what it all means.

Suhasini (Jayasudha) is a bright, carefree young woman who is deeply in love with her boyfriend Bharani (Sarath Babu). When her father is transferred to Mumbai and falls seriously ill, her world begins to crumble: Bharani stops replying to her letters, and the distance between them grows deeper. In the midst of this upheaval, Sugunakar Rao (Chiranjeevi), a colleague from her father’s office, becomes a steadying force for her and soon asks for her hand in marriage. Grateful for his support, she agrees, even as she confesses that she once had a boyfriend who seems to have forgotten her.

Yet the alliance with Sugunakar Rao reveals a darker side: he is a sadistic and jealous husband who torments her, driving her to seek a divorce. As a divorced woman with an infant in her care, Suhasini heads to Chennai to build a new life and career.

In Chennai, she finds a supportive circle at work, especially Janardhan a.k.a. Johnny, a widower and gifted ventriloquist who speaks through his puppet, Junior (Kamal Haasan). Johnny is drawn to Suhasini and harbors a quiet love for her, though he remains reticent about his feelings.

An unexpected twist of fate brings Sugunakar Rao’s mother to the city, securing a job as a maid in Suhasini’s home. Around the same time, Suhasini discovers that her letters to Bharani never reached him because they were intercepted by his mentally challenged sister. This revelation rekindles her hope and she briefly renews contact with Bharani, sensing life might still offer a chance at happiness.

But the plot thickens as Sugunakar Rao arrives in Chennai as her boss, now remorseful and eager to repair the past, even proposing another chance at marriage. The situation becomes a delicate balance of three men vying for Suhasini—her ex-love, her ex-husband, and a silent admirer who lurks on the sidelines—while she weighs the future against the ghosts of her past.

As events unfold, Suhasini comes to see that Sugunakar Rao may be trying to destroy her life and that Bharani, hampered by hesitation, has started to look toward another relationship. Johnny finally speaks up, confessing his love, but Suhasini chooses a path of dignity: she rejects romance for the moment, preferring to admire and respect Johnny from afar. Realizing that a fresh start is needed, she decides to move to a different city to begin anew, with Johnny offering his enduring support and a promise to wait for her. Her mother-in-law accompanies her to help care for her grandson, and together they set out to build a hopeful future.

In the end, the film leaves Suhasini at a crossroads where resilience and grace guide her toward a new chapter, underscored by the quiet, steadfast presence of those who care for her and the quiet, steadfast love of Johnny as a potential future, should the tides of time bend in that direction.

Q1

Why did Bharani stop replying to Suhasini's letters?

A.

Bharani never actually received Suhasini's letters. His mentally challenged sister had intercepted all their correspondence, which is why he appeared to ignore her during her time of need in Mumbai.

Earlier in Mumbai, Suhasini mentions that Bharani seems to have forgotten her, but the audience doesn't learn the real reason until the Chennai reunion.

Q2

Why did Suhasini agree to marry Sugunakar Rao?

A.

Suhasini married Sugunakar Rao because he supported her during her father's serious illness and the crisis that followed. She was grateful for his help and accepted his proposal seeking stability, even though she still carried feelings for her former boyfriend Bharani.

When Sugunakar Rao asks for her hand, Suhasini confesses she once had a boyfriend who seems to have forgotten her, hinting she's settling rather than following her heart.

Q3

What kind of husband was Sugunakar Rao to Suhasini?

A.

Sugunakar Rao turned out to be a sadistic and jealous husband who tormented and tortured Suhasini emotionally and physically. His abusive behavior eventually drove her to seek a divorce and flee to Chennai to start over.

His proposal in Mumbai appears supportive initially, but the narrative hints at a darker side that emerges only after marriage.

Q4

Why did Sugunakar Rao's mother work as a maid in Suhasini's house?

A.

Sugunakar Rao's mother discovered Suhasini's location in Chennai and deliberately took a job as a maid in her house, likely to keep watch on her former daughter-in-law and possibly to facilitate her son's attempts at reconciliation.

The timeline notes an unexpected intrusion by the ex-husband's mother, suggesting ulterior motives beyond employment.

Q5

How does Johnny communicate his feelings for Suhasini?

A.

Johnny is a ventriloquist who uses his puppet Junior as a voice to express emotions he cannot say directly. As a widower, he's shy about confessing his love for Suhasini and relies on his puppetry skills to indirectly convey his affection.

Early in Chennai, Johnny is established as someone who communicates through his puppet, hinting at his reserved nature in expressing personal feelings.

Q6

Why did Suhasini turn down Johnny's love confession?

A.

Suhasini rejected Johnny because she chose dignity and self-respect over immediate romance. She wanted to sort out her life first and not jump into another relationship while still dealing with her past. She respected Johnny too much to give him an incomplete answer.

Throughout the Chennai portion, Suhasini is portrayed as someone who prioritizes resolving her complicated situation before pursuing happiness.

Q7

Why did Sugunakar Rao come to Chennai as Suhasini's boss?

A.

Sugunakar Rao arrived in Chennai as Suhasini's boss, claiming to be remorseful and wanting another chance at marriage. However, Suhasini later realizes he may actually be trying to destroy her life rather than genuinely wanting reconciliation, revealing his possessive and vindictive nature.

His return introduces corporate power dynamics into the love triangle, complicating Suhasini's choices and adding tension.

Q8

Why did Bharani start looking at another relationship?

A.

Bharani began moving toward another girl because of Suhasini's indecision and prolonged confusion about her feelings. His interest waned as the situation remained complicated, and he chose to pursue a clearer path forward.

The timeline notes that unresolved issues and the looming presence of Sugunakar Rao hover over their renewed relationship, creating instability.
