I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of I Shot Andy Warhol (1996), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The story begins right after the 1968 shooting at The Factory, illustrating the intense moment when Valerie Solanas is taken into custody for her attack on Andy Warhol. Flashbacks unveil her turbulent life: from struggling as a sex worker in New York to navigating the trials of a challenging childhood, ultimately leading her to achieve academic success in psychology. During her time at college, Valerie discovers her identity as a lesbian, uncovers her talent for writing, and develops a unique perspective on life.

This newfound clarity propels her into the lively downtown underbelly of New York City. Through her connection with her friend Stevie, Valerie encounters Candy Darling, who introduces her to the elusive Warhol. Additionally, she forms a relationship with Maurice Girodias, the head of Olympia Press. Although Valerie hopes that Warhol will produce her provocative play Up Your Ass, Girodias pressures her to craft an adult-themed novel instead.

The situation spirals as her manuscript is stolen, and she is misled into believing it was lost. As she signs a contract with Girodias, Valerie becomes increasingly suspicious that his offer may not be as benevolent as it seems. Her growing paranoia leads her to feel trapped under the influence of Warhol and Girodias, propelling her into a delusional state. The film comes full circle, ending where it all began, with Valerie’s frantic attempt on Warhol’s life. The aftermath sees Warhol living in constant dread of another attack and grappling with the psychological scars from the shooting. Through it all, The SCUM Manifesto emerges as a seminal text in feminist literature.
