Rishi Oberoi is the only son in the wealthy Oberoi family, living in a palatial home. He is a charming yet self-centered womanizer who drinks and treats romance casually. His college classmate, Mohan, works as an employee at Rishi’s company, and the two share a long acquaintance.
During an Inter College Beauty Contest, Chandni Gupta wins and delivers a heartful speech about her philosophy of partnership: she wants to be the woman behind a successful man, and she would help him rise, even if his partner is a coward. Rishi is instantly swept away by her beauty, while Mohan is captivated by the sincerity in her words. Rishi sends flowers to impress her, and Mohan records an audio cassette that he sends to her hostel, signaling the beginning of a connection that both men notice in different ways.
Chandni agrees to meet Mohan and they begin dating. But soon a family obligation complicates matters. Chandni’s mother announces that she has arranged a marriage for Chandni with a doctor who will marry her without dowry and would pay for her younger sister Meena’s wedding. Chandni tries to explain that she has promised someone else, but her mother refuses to listen. Chandni attempts to contact Mohan, but the hostel receptionist blocks her, signaling a growing distance between them.
When Mohan learns of Chandni’s impending wedding a day before it happens, he turns to Rishi for help. He writes a letter that the doctor will receive, while Rishi agrees to fetch Chandni from her village. The doctor, who is kind-hearted, tells Chandni to follow her heart and promises to marry Mohan’s sister if needed. Chandni ultimately leaves with Rishi and travels to Mohan’s village, but Mohan’s parents demand dowry to fund his sister Meena’s wedding and threaten suicide if he marries Chandni. Mohan refuses; Rishi accompanies Chandni back to where she came from, and she decides to move forward with her life rather than fight an uphill battle over love.
Back in the city, Chandni secures a place at Rishi’s company and starts a new chapter, taking a job there and gradually pulling away from Mohan. She doesn’t speak to Mohan for about a month, though he remains hopeful and believes she still loves him. Gossip about a supposed relationship between Rishi and Chandni erupts, and Mohan reacts with violence when others gossip about them. Chandni asserts that Mohan has no right to interfere in her life, and she acknowledges the many ways he has wronged her, while admitting that she has fallen in love with Rishi.
Rishi’s father eventually confronts Chandni, suggesting a marriage for money, which she dismisses as unacceptable. After a heated confrontation, Chandni leaves home. Rishi tries to stop her, but she finds solace with the orphanage to which she once donated her prize money. She stays there for a while, and fate brings them back together on a train, where Rishi and Chandni cross paths again. In this moment, both confess their true feelings for each other, and they share a warm embrace, signaling a hopeful turn in their complicated relationship.
