How to Murder Your Wife

Stanley Ford is a celebrated newspaper cartoonist who blends his life with the adventures of Bash Brannigan. He uses real-life scenes as references, and his loyal valet Charles Firbank photographs them for drawings. The dynamic between art, reality, and satire defines his everyday world.

During a lively night for Tobey Rawlins, Stanley’s drunken chaos culminates in a marriage to a glamorous Italian woman who appears from a cake. The ceremony is officiated by a wildly inebriated judge. The morning after, Stanley bitterly regrets the impulsive marriage and vows not to work for married couples, while Charles storms off to work with Rawlins.

Stanley discovers his new wife does not speak English. His lawyer, Harold Lampson, explains that divorce is not straightforward, forcing the couple to navigate their new arrangement. The situation destabilizes Stanley’s personal and professional life.

In a misguided bid for control, Stanley conceives a plan for Brannigan to murder his wife. He drugs her at a cocktail party and stages a burial plot using a department-store mannequin at a construction site beside his townhouse. The staged crime becomes the blueprint for the fiction he writes.

The next day, Mrs. Ford sees the finished comic strip and realizes the plot, then leaves the house, taking only her dog. Her reaction signals that the plan has gone too far. The home quiets as the couple’s secrets start to unravel.

After the paper carries the story and Mrs. Ford disappears, Stanley is arrested and charged with murder. His own comic strips are used as evidence at the trial, turning his art into a courtroom confession. The mounting tension centers on whether his justifications for homicide will hold.
