What Happens in Bang, Boom, Bang: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Bang, Boom, Bang (1999) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Keek, Oliver Korittke, a part-time criminal, has blown most of the money from a bank robbery he pulled off with the now-jailed Karl-Heinz 'Kalle' Grabowski, Ralf Richter.

While in prison, Kalle watches a porn movie shot by Keek's friend Franky and to his shock he sees his wife Manuela Manuela starring in it, a revelation that drives him to escape from prison. Before killing Franky, the escaped Kalle unexpectedly appears at Keek's door and demands his money.

The next day, the alcoholic "Schlucke" Martin Semmelrogge is forced by his boss Werner Kampmann Diether Krebs to break into his transport company to pretend a burglary because of insurance fraud. Schlucke, however, boasts about his plan, so that Keek sees a chance to get the money for Kalle. Schlucke’s partner in crime, Andreas 'Andy' Fink Markus Knüfken, and a second accomplice, Ratte Heinrich Giskes, help break into the company. Because Keek has his thumb ripped off and locked in the safe during the safecracking attempt, Keek and Andy pull the safe out by tying it to a chain attached to Keek's car, leading to an iconic picture from a speeding camera.

The following day, Keek and Andy try to blackmail Kampmann with documents from his safe. At the airport, while trying to fetch the money, Keek and Andy meet both Kampmann and Kalle. Suddenly, Kampmann is being shot by Kalle, who is killed by a plainclothes-policeman afterwards. As it turns out later, the stolen money was already taken away by Kampmann's former apprentice, Melanie, who moved to Mallorca with a friend in the meantime, Melanie, Alexandra Neldel.

Q3

How does Keek lose his thumb during the burglary?

While attempting to crack the safe during the staged burglary at Kampmann's transport company, Keek gets his thumb caught in the safe's mechanism. The thumb is ripped off and remains locked inside the safe. He and Andy then drag the entire safe out by tying it to a chain attached to Keek's car.

Foreshadowing: Keek's desperation to get money for Kalle leads him to join the risky heist despite having no professional safecracking skills.

Q4

Why isn't the money at the airport when Keek and Kalle arrive?

The money is not at the airport because Kampmann's former apprentice Melanie had already taken it. She stole the cash from Kampmann's safe before the confrontation at the airport and moved to Mallorca with a friend, leaving everyone searching for money that was already gone.

Foreshadowing: Kampmann's nervousness and the presence of documents in the safe hint at his dealings with Melanie.

Q5

Why does Kalle shoot Kampmann at the airport?

Kalle shoots Kampmann during the confrontation at the airport, likely motivated by Kampmann's involvement in the money situation. The exact reasoning stems from the chaotic nature of the encounter where multiple parties are competing for the same money, with Kalle acting violently to eliminate anyone standing between him and the funds.

Q7

Who is Melanie and why does she have the money?

Foreshadowing: Kampmann's mention of an apprentice and his secretive documents hint at this betrayal.

Keek joins the burglary after learning that Schlucke plans to break into Kampmann's transport company to stage a fake robbery for insurance fraud. Keek sees an opportunity to actually steal Kampmann's money and use it to pay back Kalle, whom he owes money from their failed bank robbery.

Foreshadowing: Keek's guilt over losing Kalle's share of the money drives him to take risky chances.

Q9

Why does Kampmann arrange a staged burglary at his own company?

Kampmann forces Schlucke to stage a burglary at his transport company as part of an insurance fraud scheme. By pretending the company was robbed, Kampmann intends to collect insurance money. This elaborate plan creates the opportunity that Keek later exploits for his own purposes.
