In the enchanting town of Whoville, the Whos are buzzing with excitement as Christmas approaches. Yet, residing just north atop Mount Crumpit is the infamous Grinch, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose disdain for Christmas and the joy radiating from the Whos makes his heart swell with bitterness. Living a solitary life with his loyal dog, Max, The Grinch stumbles upon a rather dismal morning as he prepares for breakfast, only to discover his pantry completely bare due to his habit of emotional eating. Consequently, he begrudgingly heads down to Whoville for essentials. As narrated by Pharrell Williams, the exact cause of The Grinch’s nasty disposition remains a mystery. Perhaps it’s due to his slightly askew head, tight shoes, or the painful truth that his heart is two sizes too small.
Venturing into town with Max, The Grinch makes a sour impression on the Whos, shunning their spirited Christmas carols, and particularly clashing with Donna Who, portrayed by Rashida Jones, a hard-pressed single parent, juggling her responsibilities for her daughter Cindy-Lou (voiced by Cameron Seely) and her twin brothers. While Cindy-Lou sets off to send a heartfelt letter to Santa, she encounters the Grinch, who harshly implies that she, like other Whos, is nothing but greedy. After an ominous interaction, she manages to retrieve her letter.
On his way back home, The Grinch bumps into the ever-joyful Bricklebaum, voiced by Kenan Thompson, whose enthusiastic decorating drives The Grinch to the brink of frustration. Bricklebaum explains that this year’s Christmas celebration has been decreed by the Mayor, portrayed by the unforgettable Angela Lansbury, to be three times more extravagant than usual, further deepening The Grinch’s grievances. Retreating to the loneliness of his cave, he believes solitude is his only solace, while Cindy-Lou boldly declares her intention to personally deliver her letter to Santa, despite her mother’s protests about the daunting journey to the North Pole.
As Christmas Eve descends upon Whoville, a colossal tree arrives, sparking The Grinch’s irritation, leading him to concoct a plan to disrupt the festivities. He resolves to unleash a giant snowball on the tree during the mayor’s lighting ceremony. However, things take an unexpected turn when his snowball mishap lights up the tree instead, dredging up painful memories of past childhood loneliness associated with Christmas. This pivotal moment ignites The Grinch’s scheme to steal Christmas from the Whos.
With the intention of impersonating Santa Claus, The Grinch meticulously plots his mischief, recruiting Max to help him find reindeer for a sleigh. Amidst their efforts, they find Fred, a chubby reindeer, after scaring off the rest with a raucous goat. Once loaded with stolen decorations and food, the Grinch is momentarily side-tracked by a cookie at Cindy Lou’s home, inadvertently triggering her carefully laid trap. Unbeknownst to him, Cindy Lou believes he is the real Santa and innocently requests his assistance in helping her exhausted mother.
As dawn breaks on Christmas morning, The Grinch watches from Mount Crumpit as the Whos awaken to discover their Christmas has been stolen. Cindy Lou confesses to Donna that she feels guilty for capturing Santa, but Donna reassures her of her innocence. In a heartwarming turn, the Whos join in a joyous rendition of “Welcome Christmas,” a sight that confounds The Grinch. Gradually, he comes to the realization that true happiness stems not from material possessions, but from the bonds they share. As a result, he experiences a transformation, leading to his heart swelling in size.
Just as calamity strikes with the sleigh sliding toward the edge of the mountain, The Grinch finds unexpected saviors in Fred and his family, with Max helping pull him back to safety. He races down to Whoville to return everything he stole, standing before the Whos to apologize for his actions.
Later that day, in an unexpected twist, Cindy Lou invites The Grinch to dinner at her home. While initially reluctant, he accepts with Max by his side, joining the Whos, including Bricklebaum, for a heartwarming feast. Donna offers him the unique opportunity to carve the coveted Who roast beast. During his speech, The Grinch candidly expresses that he never despised Christmas; rather, it was the loneliness that had clouded his holiday spirit. He raises a toast to kindness and love, acknowledging the essence of what truly matters.
