In the charming seaside town of Wellington-on-Sea, located on the Suffolk Coast in England, the residents are buzzing with excitement as they prepare to celebrate the upcoming Christmas season. This year, the free-spirited local rebel, Bernadette McNutt, decides to shake things up during the annual school Christmas play by introducing a more liberal twist that doesn’t sit well with many parents. Danny Williams, a shy new arrival, is struggling to cope with his parents’ recent divorce and is particularly disheartened by the fact that his mother, Mrs. Williams, has to leave for work, almost causing him to miss his cue as he gazes at Sam Beccles, an anxious girl he secretly admires. Meanwhile, Charlie, Sam’s mischievous identical twin, employs her playful nature to embarrass their bully, Nisha Mulji, as the siblings make their way home on bicycles with their parents.

As Christmas approaches, the McNutt and Forrest families gather to prepare for their traditions. However, Mrs. Williams’ lack of awareness about the school being closed due to bad weather leads to some comical situations. Things escalate when Mrs. Trapper, Danny’s teacher, catches him trying to leave. Despite this, the adults plan to attend a wedding, entrusting Bernadette to watch over the kids, which leads to a series of humorous escapades involving snowmen and mischievous antics.

On Christmas Eve, the kids decide to get into the spirit by setting up a barn for their annual festivities. Chaos ensues as they attempt to retrieve turkeys from farmer Yirrell, who has been unable to deliver them due to a blizzard. Charlie’s recklessness creates tension between the twins as they navigate their familial relationships amidst the chaos of Christmas preparations. Meanwhile, Danny musters up the courage to visit Sam’s family store to pick up some treats for his father but gets flustered when he sees her, leading to a missed opportunity.

As the night falls, a blizzard traps the adults on their way home after the wedding, causing them to stay away longer than expected. The kids, left to their own devices, share heartfelt moments as they each deal with their own disappointments and joys during the holiday season. When Santa arrives in Wellington with his reindeer, he brings gifts tailored to the children’s situations, which leads to further fun and unexpected outcomes.

On Christmas Day, warmth fills the hearts of the children as they discover their presents. Bernadette takes charge, ensuring that everyone experiences the magic of the day despite the setbacks. Following some misadventures, including an ornament disaster, the family bonds grow stronger as secrets are revealed and reconciliations occur. The town bands together when Evie, Bernadette’s sister, goes missing, and the urgency of the search brings everyone closer.

With the guidance of Lighthouse Bill, the community comes together to find Evie, which eventually leads to a heartwarming reunion. As the holidays draw to a close, Danny, inspired by the events, musters the courage to ask Sam out, leading to joyful celebrations at the beach where the whole town gathers for a day of swimming in the cold ocean. This whimsical tale reminds us all about love, community, and the true spirit of Christmas.
