Mass-Observation was a social research project founded in 1937 by poet Charles Madge and anthropologist Tom Harrisson. Its goal was to record the authentic voices and daily lives of ordinary British people. In 1939, they invited members of the public to submit diary accounts, and roughly 500 people answered that call, including Nella Last.

Nella Last was a housewife from Britain who began contributing weekly diaries to Mass-Observation in 1939 at age 49. Her diaries, submitted under the label "Housewife, 49," became the core narrative of the project. She wrote about her daily life, marriage struggles, and wartime experiences, offering an intimate portrait of ordinary British life during WWII.

Several volumes were published: "Nella Last's War" (1981, edited by Richard Broad and Suzy Fleming) covers 1939-1945; "Nella Last's Peace" (2009) adds post-war entries; and "Nella Last in the 1950s" (2010) extends the narrative into the later decade. A 2007 republication renewed interest in her work.

The original diary, along with hundreds of other diaries and Mass-Observation papers, is preserved in the Mass-Observation Archive at The Keep, University of Sussex in Brighton. The archives preserve the handwriting and context of the diaries for researchers and the public.

Nella Last continued writing to Mass-Observation until her death in 1968, leaving behind a detailed record of everyday wartime life. Her diaries established a model for documenting ordinary experiences and showed how personal testimony can shape communal resilience. Her voice continues to influence understanding of how ordinary life intersected with extraordinary history.

Throughout the program, Mass-Observation staff are shown reacting to and sometimes being moved by Nella's letters. Her authentic voice illuminated how ordinary people experienced wartime Britain. Their emotional responses highlight the power of one personal story to reveal broader community experiences.
