The Mass-Observation project, begun in 1937 by Charles Madge, a poet and journalist, and Tom Harrisson, an anthropologist, aimed to “record the voice of ordinary people.” To achieve this, they recruited volunteer observers who would report their experiences, and in 1939 they invited members of the public to send in accounts of their daily lives. Among the roughly 500 participants who answered that call was Nella Last, whose weekly diaries form the core narrative of the work.

The diaries submitted to Mass-Observation are written as a running record of a life in flux, often penned in pencil and headed simply by the life detail “Housewife, 49”—the age Last had when she began the correspondence. These diaries chart the ordinary rhythms and extraordinary pressures of wartime Britain, offering a intimate portrait of a woman balancing household duties, personal feelings, and a changing world around her. Over time, the diaries—together with Mass-Observation’s reflective staff—build a portrait of a life that gradually shifts from inward, isolated struggle to outward engagement and community support through voluntary work during the war.

edited versions of Nella Last’s diary have been published to bring the private voice of this housewife to a broader audience. The book Nella Last’s War, edited by Richard Broad and Suzy Fleming, first appeared in 1981 and was later reissued by Profile Books in 2007. This volume underpins the subsequent work, as Housewife, 49 is effectively based on Last’s wartime diary entries and covers the years 1939 to 1945, placing her experiences within the broader context of the war years. A continuation of the story came with Nella Last’s Peace, published in 2009, which adds post-war entries to complete a fuller arc of life beyond the immediate conflict. A final volume, Nella Last in the 1950s: Further diaries of Housewife, 49, released in 2010, includes additional material not published in Nella Last’s War, extending the narrative into the early postwar era.

Throughout the programme, the staff of Mass-Observation are shown reacting to and sometimes moved by Last’s letters, highlighting the power of one voice to illuminate a community’s experience. Over the course of the diaries, Last moves from an introverted, isolated existence within a difficult marriage to becoming an increasingly outward-facing figure, whose voluntary work during wartime helps her become a backbone of the local community. The narrative concludes by noting that Last continued to write to Mass-Observation until her death in 1968. The original diary, together with hundreds of other diaries and Mass-Observation’s papers, is preserved in the Mass-Observation Archive, housed by the University of Sussex at The Keep in Brighton. The collection preserves a detailed record of personal experience during a pivotal period, offering future readers a window into how ordinary life intersected with extraordinary history.

The work also touches on the shifting relationships surrounding Last—how she stands up to coercive pressures within the home, how she forms and navigates friendships within a wartime community, and how the dynamics with her family evolve as life moves through the war and into the postwar era. While the personal details of these relationships are filtered through Last’s own diaries, they collectively illuminate the social fabric of the period and the ways in which one determined individual contributes to the resilience and organization of a community facing upheaval.
