Raised in an inner-city Pittsburgh orphanage, Kevin nurtures delusions of grandeur. He talks about getting rich and driving a Porsche one day. Twenty-five years later, he still chases ill-fated get-rich-quick schemes while driving a rusted MG Midget.

A handshake loan of $5,000 from loan sharks balloons to $50,000 due to interest and penalties. Unable to repay, Kevin plans to skip town at Pittsburgh International Airport. The pressure of debt drives him toward a bold, dangerous impersonation scheme.

Kevin overhears a conversation between lawyer Gary Young and his children as they await the real Derek Bond. The exchange plants the seed for Kevin's impersonation and his desperate bid to blend into Derek's life. He realizes the encounter could be used to escape his pursuers for a time.

Kevin lends his hat to the real Derek to mislead the pursuing mobsters and poses as Derek Bond to the Youngs. They take him to their posh Sewickley home, where his charm begins to win over the family and their social circle. He pretends to be a dentist, despite knowing nothing about the profession.

Kevin's charisma convinces the Youngs' circle that he is Derek Bond. He wins favor with Gary's sociable associates and grows a bond with Brooke, Gary's Goth daughter, and Jason, his aspiring basketball son. The deception deepens as he continues to adapt to this new life.

With Kevin's support, Gary confronts his bigoted boss at the law firm and quits to be with his family. The decision marks a turning point as Kevin's ruse unexpectedly helps heal the Youngs' fractured relationships. Kevin begins to question the cost of his disguise.

The mobsters threaten Kevin's best friend Larry to reveal Kevin's whereabouts. Larry reluctantly agrees to pick Kevin up, igniting a tense confrontation about loyalty. Kevin starts to realize how fragile his true friendships have become.

Kevin returns to the Youngs' house to find the mobsters have taken the family hostage. The real Derek Bond arrives, exposing Kevin's impersonation and shattering his cover. The mob forces Kevin toward a perilous fate.

Kevin escapes from his captors amid a charity marathon, using the crowds to lose his pursuers. He reconnects with Gary, who agrees to help him, in exchange for helping bring Kevin's new alliance with his family closer. The pair form a fragile partnership to survive and redeem the situation.

Kevin reveals he bought an instant lottery ticket the previous day for a chance at a $1 million prize on a Saturday-night TV show. He offers the ticket to the mobsters in exchange for forgiveness of his debt, accepting that the windfall may never be his. The deal resolves the debt but at the cost of the prize.

Fast-forward to winter, Kevin parallel-parks a shiny red Porsche with Larry in tow in front of the Youngs' house. He attends a promotional party for his new bestseller, Handbook for Houseguests, inspired by his time with the Youngs. Larry stays by his side as the next phase of his life begins.

During the party, the mobsters spin the wheel on a televised jackpot and the initial million lands on $5,000 instead. The crowd exults as Kevin secures a hard-won victory over the criminals. In the closing credits, Gary and Kevin sing food-based parodies of Christmas songs while cooking barbecue at the Youngs' backyard.
