Two small-time thieves, 29-year-old Trish Mary Stuart Masterson and her 6-year-old niece Patsy Lauren Pratt, sit in a diner planning their next heist. Patsy quietly questions the morality of their pick-pocketing, but Trish rationalizes that they target those who can afford it and even mails back wallets still containing IDs to their owners.
Trish’s former beau Mel David Hewlett arrives at the diner, being pursued by debtors. The pair head to Limber’s department store, where Patsy disguises herself with a blond wig to pick-pocket Mr. Limber Lawrence Dane. They are spotted by Bert Mark Ruffalo, a security guard.
Back at Limber’s office, they are threatened with arrest. But since it is almost Christmas and Social Services is closed, Bert is asked to keep watch over them at his place, though he protests. After Christmas, on December 26, Patsy is to be placed with a foster family who can better look out for her interests, and Trish is to face charges.
As the hours pass, Trish and Bert begin to develop an attraction for each other. Bert takes them to Maplewood for his family’s holiday dinner, and then to Santa’s Castle where Patsy confesses her misdeeds to Santa’s head elf Howard Hesseman and writes Santa a note, asking him to deliver a bicycle to Bert’s apartment, where they have been staying.
Very early on December 26, Bert rushes to Limber’s to buy the bicycle, and Patsy is elated to find it delivered later that morn. But then Mel kidnaps Patsy to force her to pick-pocket during the post-Christmas crowd at Limber’s. He is confronted by Bert and everyone ends up back in the office where Social Services officials await them. But with Patsy’s wish coming true, they get a second chance. Mel is hauled off to jail. Bert quits his job and proposes to Trish.
