House of Darkness

On a shadowy night enveloping the rural landscape, we meet the charming yet naive young yuppie, Hapgood “Hap” Jackson (Justin Long). He finds himself driving the captivating Mina Murray (Kate Bosworth) back to her impressive, castle-like estate situated in a secluded area. As they arrive with anticipation in the cool night air, their conversation flows, reminiscing about how they initially crossed paths in a nearby bar earlier that evening. Mina, without a vehicle of her own, had asked Hap for a ride home, adding an element of intrigue to their meeting.

Upon entering her grand home, the current abruptly cuts off the electric lights, plunging the space into darkness. In response, Mina cleverly lights several candles and ignites a fire within the expansive wood-burning fireplace of the sitting room, casting a flickering glow that fills the room with warmth. They continue to share intimate banter; Hap finds himself enchanted by Mina’s elegant demeanor and the striking white dress she wears, which echoes the fashion of the 19th Century Victorian era rather than resuming a modern style.

As the evening unfolds, Mina discreetly steps away to grab some drinks, prompting Hap to make a call to a male friend—eager to share the details of his enticing hookup. When Mina returns, their conversation takes a flirtatious turn, laced with charming kisses. The mood grows more electric as Mina begins to unbuckle Hap’s pants, steering the night towards a more intimate encounter. Just as passion flares, they are hilariously interrupted by Mina’s sister, Lucy (Gia Crovatin), and the electric lights miraculously flicker back on. Hap’s imagination spins with the potential of a thrilling threesome.

As the drinks flow, Hap finds himself a bit too relaxed and drifts into a troubled slumber—a nightmarish vision envelops him where he is trapped in a cave surrounded by an eerie pile of shoes, a chilling indication of his fate among victims before him. Struggling in despair, he attempts to escape but tragically falls, breaking both ankles. As he writhes in pain, a dark shadow slowly approaches.

Awakening from his nightmare, Lucy invites Hap on an enchanting tour through the manor, showcasing its long hallways and leading him up to the rooftop where a mesmerizing starry sky awaits. Mina eventually joins them, and a request arises to share ghost stories, potentially luring Hap into their world. He clumsily spins a tale of his inappropriate encounter, highlighting his crude nature and revealing his hidden misogyny. However, Lucy takes the reins with a haunting story of three wronged women exacting their revenge on men who betrayed them. The dread creeps upon Hap as Lucy’s tale hints at a cave resembling the one from his nightmare.

The atmosphere becomes charged when a third sister, Nora (Lucy Walters), enters, their intentions becoming unfurling before Hap’s very eyes. Recognizing the women are preparing to teach him a crucial lesson in morality, Hap’s demeanor becomes defensive, leading him to make a break for the entrance. Yet, in an astonishing revelation, Mina showcases her supernatural speed, effortlessly blocking his path and attacking him in a shocking twist—her bite drawing blood.

In a harrowing moment, the true nature of these women is revealed; they are vampires, entwined with dark powers. Mina, Lucy, and Nora display their fangs, launching at Hap in a chilling frenzy as they devour him right there in the foyer, claiming him as their latest victim in an eternal night of darkness.
