As Harkin Banks, a lively young freestyle skier from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, arrives at the renowned Squaw Valley Ski Resort for the Freestyle World Championship, his excitement is infectious. During a brief stop at a local gas station, he encounters Sunny, a spirited 17-year-old runaway heading to San Francisco. The two quickly forge a connection and decide to share accommodation at the resort. Their bond grows deeper over dinner, where they meet Harkin’s idol, the larger-than-life Rudolph “Rudi” Garmisch – a figure whose overconfidence matches his extraordinary skills on the slopes. As the night progresses, Harkin impresses Sunny with his guitar skills, leading to a romantic moment between them.

The next day sees Harkin easily qualify for the main event after executing a flawless routine. However, two of his American teammates are unjustly overlooked despite their impressive performances, as the event organizers bend to the demands of European sponsors. Undeterred, Harkin befriends a lively group of skiers, led by the daring Dan O’Callahan, a freestyle veteran affectionately known as “The Rat Pack.” As the night continues, Harkin and Sunny receive an invitation to a wild house party hosted by the captivating Sylvia, who has her eyes on the young athlete. After a heated argument with Sunny, Harkin succumbs to Sylvia’s allure, leading to a heated moment in the bathtub. Meanwhile, Sunny seeks refuge in the sauna, where she finds unexpected comfort in Rudi’s embrace.

The following day, Rudi flaunts his latest conquest on the slopes, goading Harkin before the ski ballet segment. Despite his best efforts, Harkin falls short of the mark, finishing in fifth place while Rudi snags the top spot. The crowd’s disappointment is palpable as Sunny confronts Harkin about their previous night’s escapades. Initially contemplating leaving, Sunny ultimately decides to stay and master the art of skiing. As the competition intensifies, Harkin delivers thrilling performances on both the moguls and aerials, yet he remains overshadowed by Rudi’s commanding presence. Ultimately, Rudi is crowned the supreme freestyle world champion, while Harkin earns a respectable second place.
