The Voyager crew encounters a mysterious protostar and, hoping to harness it as a potential power source, Captain Kathryn Janeway decides to beam samples aboard the ship. This risky move triggers a cascade of trouble when the samples are transported to Voyager, destabilizing the plan and setting off a chain of strange phenomena. As Janeway weighs options, she proposes to B’Elanna Torres that Ensign Harry Kim could help manage the situation, only to discover that Kim is missing. The hunt for him reveals something unsettling: Kim’s holodeck program, based on the epic Beowulf, is still running, and anyone who steps into the program begins to vanish from reality.

Facing a mystery that defies conventional extraction, Janeway turns to the Doctor, the ship’s immaterial hologram, believing his very nature might shield him from the dematerialization that has claimed the others. The Doctor’s nerves about venturing into an away mission are evident, and Kes lends support by encouraging him to forge an identity of his own. He contemplates three possible names to adopt, but he keeps his choices to himself, hinting at a deeper struggle with self-definition.

Inside the holodeck, the Doctor meets Freya, a formidable shieldmaiden. He introduces himself as “Schweitzer” and is ushered into a ceremonial hall where he must prove his worth before the company. After a festive communal meal, the participants retire to separate rooms; Freya reappears that night and, testing the Doctor’s courage, suggests that he should join her by the hearth. He resists initially, but over time his inhibitions begin to loosen, revealing a growing attachment and vulnerability in this virtual world.

The plot thickens when Unferth appears, and Freya is fatally slain by the swordsman. Freya dies in Schweitzer’s arms, her final words spoken with his name still echoing in the air. This brutal turn underscores the peril of the holodeck’s illusion and the Doctor’s emerging realization that something far more dangerous than a simple program is at work.

As the Doctor continues his investigation, a troubling truth comes into view: alien energy lifeforms have been beamed into the ship through the same containment field that held the protostar’s samples. The missing crew members have, in fact, been transformed into energy by these lifeforms, likely used as hostages in retaliation for Voyager’s actions. The Doctor makes a decisive move—he releases the energy lifeforms from the holodeck, and in doing so, the missing crew are restored to their original forms.

In the aftermath, the Doctor reflects on his experience and the unsettling association with the name Schweitzer. The memories tied to that identity are painful, and ultimately he chooses not to keep the name, recognizing that some identities, though protective in the moment, carry a burden he’s not willing to bear any longer. The episode closes with a return to stability aboard Voyager, but the events leave a lasting impression on how the crew confronts danger, illusion, and the fragile boundaries between simulation and reality.
