To celebrate Maggie Peyton's college graduation, her father, Ray Peyton Sr., takes her to a junkyard. Here, she discovers an old Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie, which is on the verge of being crushed due to his previous racing failures.

Maggie, recognizing Herbie's plight, decides to save him from destruction. This act not only rescues the car but sets off a series of unexpected racing adventures.

Determined to gain Maggie's attention, Herbie displays his charming personality. He leads her to the garage where her boyfriend, Kevin, works, revealing his extraordinary ability to communicate.

While attending a car show to gather parts, Herbie unexpectedly pushes Maggie into a racing outfit. She is compelled to challenge NASCAR champion Trip Murphy to an impromptu race, which she shockingly wins.
