Heidi und Peter

Two years have passed since Heidi and Klara parted. Klara has suffered a relapse and sometimes has to sit in the chair again, underscoring the fragility of her condition.

Heidi is doing well at school, while Peter spends his time sledging and dreaming of mountain adventures. Their different concerns hint at the separate paths each character will follow.

Alpöhi devises a plan to push Peter toward better study habits and brighter prospects. The plan foreshadows a Nikolaus night that will motivate him.

On December 6, Alpöhi dresses as Nikolaus and frightens Peter, prompting him to vow to improve in school. Heidi's help eventually improves Peter's reading to fluency.

Klara can finally travel to Switzerland to visit Heidi. Peter loses the letter announcing her arrival, and Heidi learns of Klara's visit only at the last moment.

Klara's arrival forces Heidi to take care of her guest, and Klara's limited mobility means Heidi cannot accompany Peter up the mountain. Peter is annoyed because he had built a shelter for Heidi.

In the Alps, Peter meets surveyors and considers taking up their profession so he can stay in the mountains. The training costs are high, and his mother cannot afford them.

Peter becomes taciturn toward Heidi and Klara. He finds a parked wheelchair and pushes it down the mountain, hoping Klara will leave because she depends on it. He later has nightmares about his action.

During a stormy night, Alpöhi must go to the village as floods threaten the area. Klara follows in panic, and Heidi and her grandfather find her near the bridge.

The village floods but there are no casualties, though there is material damage. Klara, shaken by the adventure, helps with cleaning and seems healthier afterward.

To avoid future floods, the stream is diverted. A public festival is organized to raise funds for the project.

Heidi and Peter, accompanied by Klara on the piano, sing in the spa town to raise funds for the project. Before they leave, Mr. Sesemann commits to funding Peter's studies to become a surveyor.
