Heat (1987) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Heat (1987), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In a neon-lit Las Vegas bar, D.D. sits with her milquetoast date, Osgood, enjoying the hum of the casino night. When a tough-looking drunk tries his luck with her, Osgood steps in, delivering a decisive blow and forcing an apology. The man turns out to be Nick Escalante, a former soldier of fortune who is marketed as a “chaperone” but actually works as a ruthless bodyguard for hire. Nick’s sharp reflexes and mastery with improvised weapons make him a formidable figure, and his grim determination is clear: he is trying to stack enough money to move to Venice, Italy and start anew.

Nick’s path crosses with Cyrus Kinnick, a meek but wealthy young man who wants companionship in his gambling life, yet what he truly seeks is to learn how to be tough. The dynamic between them unfolds as Nick weighs the possibility of shaping Cyrus into someone capable of surviving the dangerous undercurrents of Vegas gaming and crime.

Trouble intensifies when Holly, a friend of Nick’s who works in the city’s seedier circles, is brutally beaten during a date with Danny DeMarco, a high-stakes Vegas gambler with strong ties to organized crime. Nick vows to help Holly seek justice, and he leverages his friendship with the local crime boss, Baby, to gain access to DeMarco’s hotel suite. When Nick questions DeMarco about Holly’s suffering, DeMarco coldly dismisses it as “just a great game.” DeMarco offers a mere $20,000 in restitution, but pulls a weapon when Nick reaches for the cash, ordering his two enforcers, Kinlaw and Tiel, to finish the job. Nick improvises with whatever sharp edges he can find—a medallion, the razor-sharp edge of a credit card—turning the suite into a claustrophobic arena where he defeats Kinlaw and Tiel in a brutal confrontation.

Holly, arriving at DeMarco’s suite, confronts him and, in a shocking display, cuts the top of his penis, taunting him about the fragility of his power. DeMarco tries to pin her suffering on his henchmen, but Kinlaw insists the henchmen never got a turn until DeMarco was finished with her. Nick steps in, refusing Holly’s offer of half the money and accepting only what she’s already given, while she hands over another sum to be sent to Nick after she leaves Vegas.

From there, Nick grows closer to Cyrus Kinnick, offering practical advice on how to defend oneself. Using the money Holly provided, Nick plays blackjack with a dealer named Cassie, moving through a casino world where every bet carries risk. Cyrus comes to realize that Nick’s stubborn attachment to Vegas isn’t just about money, but a deeper compulsion—the gambler’s itch that keeps pulling him back. After a run of luck, Nick wins enough to imagine a life in Venice, but the thrill of the game proves stronger than the dream of retirement; he returns to the table and loses everything again.

DeMarco intensifies his vendetta, reporting to Baby that Kinlaw and Tiel are dead and that Nick killed them with their own guns. Baby challenges the claim, noting that Nick never uses firearms, a detail that gnaws at DeMarco as he tries to maintain control. The tension escalates as DeMarco accuses Nick while Baby slowly deduces that DeMarco himself orchestrated the killings to frame Nick.

Ignoring Baby’s orders not to kill Nick, DeMarco escalates the violence by bringing more thugs to capture him. The two forces collide at Nick’s office, where Nick fend’s off the assault, aided by Cyrus’s courageous act of stepping into a line of fire to shield him. A protracted chase ensues, during which Nick eliminates the hired gunmen one by one. DeMarco bolts back to his suite, only to find the power knocked out and Nick hidden in the darkness, taunting him about the remaining consequences. When DeMarco fires blindly, Nick reveals that he has only one bullet left and backhands him with a chilling promise of torture if he misses again. Faced with the mounting threat, DeMarco kills himself rather than surrender to Nick’s vengeance.

The film unfolds in multiple cuts, each offering a different tone. In one version, Nick surveys DeMarco’s body before the scene shifts to a bright moment in Venice, where he’s seen relaxing on a gondola, a stark contrast to the violence that preceded. In another cut, Cyrus Kinnick survives and recovers in a hospital, hinting at alternate fates shaped by the same night of turmoil. The throughline remains: a man driven by a compulsive need to win, to survive, and to carve out a future—whether in the glittering casinos of Las Vegas or the romantic canals of Venice.
