Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo! (2020) Plot Summary Explained

Dr. Jonathan Crane was identified as the Haunted Scarecrow because Velma traced a fan letter sent to Elvira and measured fear-gas leakage from his costume. The evidence pointed to Crane, a former Arkham escapee, as the mastermind behind the initial haunting at Elvira's Halloween parade. However, Velma later realized she missed a crucial detail when Crane hinted that the drones did not leak, suggesting someone else was behind the larger plot.

The drones were releasing fear gas, a chemical compound developed from Dr. Crane's formula. When released over the parade crowd, the gas triggered panic and fear, which served the villains' larger plan to create chaos in Crystal Cove. Scooby-Doo and Shaggy fought back by launching Halloween candies as improvised projectiles to disrupt the drones.

Scooby and Shaggy discovered a disabled drone in a pumpkin patch along with a truck full of toxic waste. When Crane's fear formula came into contact with the pumpkins, it animated them into the Jackal Lanterns, monster-like creatures that pursued the duo. These animated pumpkins later escalated into a giant monster when one consumed a reporter.

Cutler Toe, the head of Toe Omnitech, was revealed as the true mastermind. He impersonated the Sheriff to frame the Mystery Inc. gang and orchestrated the entire Jackal Lantern attack to target a lithium mine in Crystal Cove. After the gang uncovered his scheme, Toe vanished and left no trace, though federal agents eventually tracked his car using a hologram of the Jackal Lanterns.

Cutler Toe's motivation was to gain control of the lithium mine in Crystal Cove. By framing the Mystery Inc. gang as villains through the Jackal Lantern attack and impersonating the Sheriff, Toe hoped to eliminate the gang and seize the valuable lithium resources for his corporation.

Velma took a leap of faith and entered the Giant Jackal Lantern's mouth, discovering that the massive monster was actually a machine rather than a living creature. Inside, she found all the other survivors safely trapped, and the real threats were the drones operating within the mechanical monster. This revelation allowed her to escape unharmed and expose the true nature of the threat.

The original Mystery Machine was destroyed during the chase with the Jackal Lanterns. The Giant Jackal Lantern rode the original van, and it was consumed along with Dr. Crane and the Sheriff when the monster grew larger. After the case was closed, Bill Nye and the gang helped Fred rebuild the Mystery Machine at a roadside Halloween celebration.

Foreshadowing: Fred's despondence over the damaged van foreshadowed its ultimate destruction.

The surviving gang members gathered in Velma's mind palace to recount the night's events and piece together the truth. By combining all the evidence, Crane's hint about the drones not leaking, the pumpkin patch discovery, and the Sheriff's suspicious behavior, Velma connected the dots and realized the Jackal Lanterns were a technological hoax rather than supernatural monsters.

When Velma unmasked Dr. Crane as the Scarecrow, he was pulled away by federal agents who claimed the drones did not leak. This cryptic remark hinted that Velma had solved only part of the puzzle, the Scarecrow plot, but had missed the larger conspiracy involving the drones and the Jackal Lanterns, which were actually controlled by Cutler Toe.

After the original Mystery Machine was severely damaged during the chase, Fred and Velma met Bill Nye, who gifted them a modernized vehicle called Mystery Machine X. Fred remained attached to the original van and expressed reluctance to switch, but the new vehicle became essential for the gang to respond to the escalating danger and ultimately helped them pursue Cutler Toe.
