On a sprawling Vendée farm, a dying father extracts a vow from his three sons and daughter that none will marry, lest the land be divided. Months later, the eldest brother, Francis, assumes responsibility, preserving the promise and shielding his siblings from temptation. Despite his efforts, his sister Amanda eventually finds herself courted by a young man from the neighboring village, testing the family's oath.
