1930s Provençal village empties as youth flee to city jobs, leaving only the elderly and poacher Panturle, who dreams of reviving the hamlet and farming. Traveling knife‑grinder Urbain Gedemus brings a girl, Arsule, who endures his cruelty to survive. She learns Panturle’s hope, escapes, stays, and together they build a happy farming life, fulfilling his dream.
