Set in early‑20th‑century Brittany, a peasant family lives under one roof, sharing chores, nightly stories and discussions of politics. Amid poverty and death, their son Pierre’s lyrical childhood is shattered by war and his father’s conscription; he learns catechism, values school as a Red, and rides the ‘horse of pride’ lifted by his grandfather.
