Locals in the early‑20th‑century Spanish village of Peñaflor called Juan Andrés Aldije Monmeja “the Frenchman,” the proprietor of the town bar and restaurant. Beneath his friendly façade he ran an illegal gambling den and prostituted his waitresses. Seeking quicker profit, he began murdering customers, stealing their money and burying the bodies in the garden behind the inn, prompting the community to demand answers.
