The film begins during the historic independence of Bangladesh, where two abandoned boys, Bikram and Bala, are discovered in a perilous situation. A man named Lateef finds them and offers them a chance to work for him, inadvertently pulling them into a world of crime.

Lateef becomes a guardian to Bikram and Bala, providing them a semblance of safety amid chaos. However, their vulnerability is highlighted when an army officer demands that Lateef sacrifice one of the boys to serve him, threatening his own daughter if he refuses.

In a brave act of selflessness, Bikram decides to take on the officer's threat, intending to save Bala from a horrific fate. Despite his determination, Bala exhibits a fierce loyalty to his friend, ultimately killing the officer in a desperate move.

After the harrowing events, the boys manage to escape to Kolkata via train. They begin a new chapter, trying to survive by working at a small restaurant, which introduces them to a challenging new environment.

Tensions rise for Bala when the restaurant owner humiliates him by branding him a refugee. This moment becomes a catalyst for their transformation from innocent boys into desperate criminals trying to establish their identities.

Bikram and Bala escalate their criminal activities from petty thievery to notorious train robberies. Their reputation grows as they confront and take down a famous coal bandit, challenging the stigma of being 'refugees' while searching for belonging.

Under the guidance of their lawyer Kali Kaka, Bikram and Bala transition to legitimate businessmen. They leverage their resources to support those in need, ironically earning respect and admiration from the community as the 'Gunday.'

A.C.P. Satyajeet Sarkar is dispatched to Kolkata with a clear warning for the boys. He informs them that he will take action against them as soon as he finds a single piece of evidence of their illegal activities.

The arrival of Nandita, a captivating cabaret dancer, complicates Bikram and Bala's friendship. Both friends develop feelings for her and agree that whoever wins her heart will marry her, setting the stage for rivalry and betrayal.

After multiple attempts to woo Nandita, the two friends accompany her to a theater. A confrontation occurs when Bala violently reacts to an insult directed at Nandita, resulting in the death of a man and an urgent need to protect his future.

Bikram, mindful of Bala's volatile reaction, urges him to leave the city temporarily for safety. Meanwhile, Nandita's insistence on meeting Bikram at Durga Puja reveals her true feelings, adding to the complexity of their friendships.

Bikram's emotional conflict leads him to attend the Durga Puja, breaking his promise to Bala. Nandita claims she will not meet him again if he doesn't come, ultimately expressing her attraction towards Bikram during the festivities.

Upon discovering Bikram's betrayal, Bala confronts him during the Durga Puja. Their friendship deteriorates further, culminating in violent clashes as the bond forged through shared struggles begins to unravel.

In a shocking turn, Nandita is kidnapped by Bala, leading Bikram to ally with A.C.P. Sarkar. This alliance underlines the shift from friendship to rivalry, emphasizing how far they have drifted apart in their quest for power and love.

As tensions culminate and both men face betrayal, they unite against their mutual enemies. However, their escape is thwarted when Nandita's loyalties are revealed, forcing them to confront both the police and their own unresolved issues.
