What Happens in Guest from the Future: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Guest from the Future (2024) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Two schoolboys, Young Pioneers Kolya Gerasyimov and Fima Korolyov, find themselves drawn to a mysterious woman and follow her to an eerie, abandoned house. Upon entering the house, they see no sign of her, but Kolya stumbles upon a secret door leading to a hidden room filled with high-tech devices. Curiosity piqued, Kolya begins to press buttons, inadvertently activating a machine that transports him to an incredible future.

Narrative unfolds as we discover that Kolya has arrived in an institute of time research in the year 2084. Here, employees travel through time, returning with various artifacts, which are cataloged by Werther, an android with an unrequited affection for a woman named Polina. Amidst the confusion of time travel, Kolya is caught by Werther, who assumes the boy is another subject brought in by Polina. Surprised and intrigued, Kolya learns he's been transported to an unprecedented future.

Werther initially considers holding Kolya at the institute but eventually decides to send him back in time, believing he can cover up Polina's supposed oversight. However, Kolya persuades Werther to let him explore this extraordinary new world before returning home. As he ventures through this futuristic realm, Kolya discovers concepts such as teleportation, humanoid aliens, anti-gravity, and even space flights. During his travels, he encounters Grandpa Pavel, a 130-year-old man fascinated by Kolya's 1980s school uniform.

In a series of exciting events, Kolya attempts to obtain a ticket for an interplanetary flight but ends up joining a group of students escorting a project satellite to its launch pad. There, he witnesses a bizarre scene where two service workers are suddenly incapacitated and replaced by shape-shifting aliens. Kolya later reunites with Grandpa Pavel and shares his alarming discovery, but the old man dismisses it, unable to grasp the reality of the situation.

Introducing another vital character, Professor Seleznyov, the director of an interplanetary zoo, Kolya learns more about the curious aliens who are, it turns out, space pirates. As the plot thickens, Kolya discovers the aliens' sinister plan involving a device known as the myelophone, capable of reading minds. When the pirates disguise themselves and infiltrate the zoo, they successfully steal this device from Alisa Seleznyova, Professor Seleznyov's daughter, who is attempting to communicate with animals.

With the help of a talking goat named Napoleon and a mysterious man, Kolya temporarily recovers the myelophone and manages a thrilling escape from the pursuing pirates. Kolya quickly returns to the institute, but trouble arises when the pirates follow him into the past, using the time machine in their pursuit.

Back in the 20th century, Alisa also arrives in the past, but unfortunately, she meets with an accident. In the meantime, Kolya and Fima strategize on how to deal with the myelophone and the looming threat from the space pirates, who have taken up residence in the deserted house. Alisa, recovering in the hospital and adopting a facade of amnesia, begins to express strange claims about dolphin languages, piquing the curiosity of her hospital roommate, Yulya.

As Kolya and Fima delve deeper into the web of adventure, they share paranoia-filled moments, suspecting the presence of dangerous agents around them. Their misadventures lead them to a series of confrontations with the cunning pirates, setting in motion a harrowing chase that ends with Kolya caught and whisked away.

Amid desperate attempts to rescue him, Alisa, alongside Yulya and their school friends, rallies to locate Kolya. With time running out, they pursue the pirates and try to decipher their plans with the help of the myelophone. The climax escalates as the children, spurred by urgency and courage, band together one last time in the abandoned house, where Kolya is being interrogated by the aliens posing as his grandpa.

The grand finale unfolds with a heartfelt rescue led by Polina, who intervenes to battle the space pirates, showcasing her powers. Between the time-traveling mischief and brave escapades, the story takes a poignant turn as the group must confront their futures, aspirations, and the bonds of friendship that weave them together through time, culminating in an unforgettable journey that resonates with the theme of hope and adventure.

As Alisa steps into the time machine to return to her era, she bids farewell with promises of all that is to come, leaving with the echo of a song that hints at the beauty of the unknown future, "The Beautiful Afar."

Q1

How does Kolya end up transported to the future?

Kolya stumbles into a hidden room in the abandoned house and begins pressing buttons on a high-tech device out of pure curiosity. He has no idea the machine is a functioning time travel apparatus, so when he activates it, he is instantly sent to the year 2084 and the institute of time research.

Foreshadowing: The mysterious woman leads the boys straight to the house, suggesting the location was chosen as an entry point for time travelers.

Q2

Why does Werther let Kolya explore the future instead of sending him home immediately?

Werther initially plans to return Kolya to the 20th century to cover up Polina's mistake of leaving the time machine active. Kolya then talks him into letting him see the future first, and Werther agrees partly because he is fascinated by the situation and partly because a brief tour seems harmless.

Q3

What is the myelophone and why do the space pirates want it?

The myelophone is a mind-reading device housed at the interplanetary zoo that Alisa Seleznyova uses to communicate with animals. The space pirates want to steal it because the ability to read minds gives them an enormous advantage in carrying out their plan to alter history and return to power.

Q4

Why does Grandpa Pavel refuse to believe Kolya about the shape-shifting aliens?

Pavel is a 130-year-old man who has lived through extraordinary technological changes, but the idea that pirates can perfectly impersonate people is too alarming to accept on a child's word. He assumes Kolya is overreacting, which gives the disguised pirates time to fully replace him and infiltrate the zoo.

Q5

How do the space pirates manage to follow Kolya back to the 20th century?

Kolya uses the time machine at the institute to escape with the recovered myelophone, but Werther is forced to fight the pirates to buy him time. The pirates overpower Werther, take control of the same time device, and chase Kolya through it directly into the past, which is how the conflict spreads to the 1980s.

Q6

Why does Alisa pretend to have amnesia at the hospital?

Alisa is recovering from a serious accident after being hit by a trolleybus, and she realizes that explaining she is from the future would attract dangerous attention. By faking amnesia and acting disoriented, she hides the truth from the pirates who are searching the hospital disguised as doctors and protects Kolya's secret.

Foreshadowing: Her strange comments about dolphin languages are a calculated way to test Yulya without revealing too much.

Q7

Who is Polina and why does she show up at the end to defeat the pirates?

Polina is the mysterious woman who originally led Kolya and Fima to the abandoned house, and she works at the institute of time research. She arrives during the final showdown because she has been tracking the pirate threat, and she uses her own abilities to overpower them and rescue the children from the abandoned house.

Foreshadowing: Her very first appearance at the abandoned house sets up the entire story, hinting she is far more than an ordinary passerby.

Q8

What happens to Werther during the escape from the institute?

Werther stays behind to fight the pirates so that Kolya can escape with the myelophone. The android sacrifices himself in the confrontation, which is why he never appears again in the 1980s timeline. His loss gives the finale a bittersweet edge despite the children's victory.

Foreshadowing: Werther's quiet devotion to Polina hints at a character willing to sacrifice for others.

Q9

How does Kolya recover the myelophone from the pirates the first time?

Q10

Q11

What is the space pirates' actual plan to alter history?

Defeated in an intergalactic war, the pirates want to use the myelophone's mind-reading power to manipulate key figures in the past and rewrite the events that led to their loss. Stealing the device and traveling back to the 20th century is their opening move toward reshaping history in their favor.

Q12

Why does Alisa have to return to her own time at the end?

Q13

Why doesn't Kolya tell any adults about the pirates back in the 20th century?

Kolya and Fima know the pirates are shape-shifters who can impersonate anyone, including authority figures. Telling adults would risk revealing their location to an imposter, so the boys treat the situation like a spy operation and handle it themselves with Alisa and their school friends.

Q14

How can viewers tell the difference between the real Pavel and the pirate impersonating him?

The film deliberately blurs the line for most of the runtime because the pirates have perfected Pavel's appearance and mannerisms. Only later, when the real Pavel is rescued from captivity, do the characters confirm that the Pavel interacting with Kolya at the zoo was actually a pirate in disguise.

Foreshadowing: Kolya's uneasy feeling around the Pavel at the zoo hints that something is off about him.
