While drifting through Mexico, American engineer Joseph Wiley, Ryan O’Neal, encounters a high-society woman named Liliana Holbrook, Anne Archer. She secures him a room in an expensive hotel, and soon Wiley discovers emeralds hidden in his lodgings after a mysterious phone call invites him to a dawn meeting on a secluded beach. On the way to the rendezvous, he’s shot at and is forced to dive into the sea, only to be rescued by Holbrook in a speedboat. Back at Holbrook’s home, the story expands as she reveals a personal stake: her sister Carrie has disappeared while traveling in Colombia. To find her, Holbrook brings in Meno Argenti, Omar Sharif, a former diamond trader who was exiled for dealing in stolen stones. Argenti still has influence in the emerald trade and hopes that a marriage to Holbrook—the daughter of a wealthy diamond magnate—will win him back a place in the circle he once owned. The alliance is precarious, built on old loyalties and a thirst for dominance in a cutthroat trade.

In Colombia, Argenti introduces Wiley to the operation that fuels his ambitions, including a caressingly secretive vault whose walls are lined with emeralds that respond to a voice-activated system. Holbrook and Wiley decide to search for Carrie, and their investigation leads them to the heart of a rebel movement. Carrie’s fate is grim: she was killed by the army while aiding the rebels, a harsh reminder of the price paid by those who cross power lines in the region. The rebels, led by Miguel, reveal a more complex network, as emeralds are being smuggled from a coffee plantation to fund the cause. Miguel, Domingo Ambriz, shows them the operation and the risks involved in challenging the established order.

Holbrook agrees to help the rebels, and the couple heads back into the interior to secure a shipment that could disrupt Argenti’s control. The path is perilous, and their progress is halted by the very patrol that claimed Carrie’s life. A tense confrontation ensues, with Holbrook defending herself and Wiley; she fires first at the patrol leader, and the rebels take advantage of the confusion to kill the remaining soldiers. The pair are captured again and held overnight, a bleak reminder of how fragile their escape plans are. The following morning brings a renewed sense of purpose as they press on with Miguel’s group, determined to outmaneuver Argenti’s network.

The plan evolves into a bold heist: to infiltrate Argenti’s skyscraper headquarters and pry loose the vault’s contents. Wiley reconnects with his old ally Claude, John Larroquette, who lends his expertise to the audacious break-in. With Miguel, they devise a daring method involving cloudhopper one‑man hot air balloons to land on the roof undetected. Once atop the building, Wiley and Miguel slip inside the vault. They manage to wield a covert recording of Argenti to bypass security, then crack the vault and begin to extract the emeralds. Wiley descends to the street where the rebels wait, but Miguel becomes ensnared and cannot fully descend. Alarm spreads quickly through Argenti’s men, forcing Wiley to make a harrowing escape as Miguel, in a final act of sacrifice, disconnects from his harness and falls to his death.

The escape becomes a pursuit across urban and rural landscapes. Wiley and Holbrook manage a fragile getaway on a boat, only to be intercepted by a Colombian naval patrol. The commander, unaware of the emerald stash, inadvertently destroys illegal fishing bait and releases the hidden stones into the sea, complicating things further. Argenti and his henchmen close in on Wiley and Holbrook, trailing them to a secluded holiday home near Miami. A violent confrontation unfolds: Holbrook is wounded, and Wiley corners Argenti, who is eventually killed by his associate Jaap, a figure embedded in the shadowy world of the diamond trade and acting on orders that hang over Argenti’s downfall. The tension eases only when Jaap’s intervention ends Argenti’s scheme, allowing Holbrook to recover and Wiley to press toward a final, uneasy victory.

In the aftermath, Wiley’s attention shifts to a quieter, more lucrative payoff. He accepts a delivery of Colombian coffee, a seemingly ordinary shipment that conceals a cache of emeralds from the rebels’ plantation inside. The arrangement marks a dangerous détente: the emeralds have moved from a web of smuggling to a new, fragile channel that could sustain the rebels’ cause or pull Wiley deeper into a conflict that has no clear end.
