Set in 1957, Great Moments in Aviation follows Gabriel Angel, Rakie Ayola, a young Caribbean woman from Grenada who boards a cruise to England with the dream of becoming an aviator. On the ship, Gabriel shares a cabin with Duncan Stewart, Jonathan Pryce. The rest of the passengers, including Angela Bead, Vanessa Redgrave, and Gwendolyne Quim, Dorothy Tutin, assume the pair are married, and when Professor Rex Goodyear, John Hurt, appears to recognize Duncan as his old acquaintance Alasdair Birch, Duncan uses the cover to keep up the double act. It transpires that Duncan is a forger who long ago stole a Titian painting from Goodyear and had an affair with his wife.
Goodyear believes that his painting is onboard the ship and infers that Duncan was responsible for the death of his wife. Gabriel is furious with the deception, but the two eventually reconcile and even give in to their growing attraction. Gabriel explains that she has a husband waiting for her in England—Michael, whom she has been apart from for two years—so her trip is also meant to bring her closer to a lifelong dream of piloting, inspired by her grandfather Thomas, Oliver Samuels, who once flew into a storm and never came home.
As the voyage unfolds, Gabriel forms a tentative bond with Duncan that is deepened by shared ambitions and passion. Meanwhile, Angela Bead and Gwendolyne Quim discover that they have long harbored love for each other, and they become lovers, promising to live together in retirement. The film weaves these personal revelations into a larger tapestry of what family and loyalty mean when love challenges convention.
A pivotal turn reveals that Goodyear’s wife’s death was an accident, caused during a fight over the painting, and Duncan returns the artwork while destroying forged papers in front of Gabriel. With the truth laid bare, Gabriel confesses that her marriage to Michael is over, and she and Duncan choose to begin a life together. The narrative shifts to a hopeful future as Vesuvia, Gabriel’s grandmother, Carmen Munroe, reads a letter from England confirming that Gabriel and Duncan are happy together, facing some prejudice from Britons toward their interracial relationship. They are also expecting a child, and Vesuvia’s family celebration signals a new chapter for the generations to come. As the ship’s tale closes, Gabriel is shown finally soaring as a licensed aviator, flying overhead and realizing her dream at last.
