In New York City, Nora Mae Edwards meets John Henry Cox, a mysterious man who asks her to marry him after only meeting him. She resigns from her night shift at the diner and follows him to the small town of Newbury. They marry that night in a ceremony attended by pillars of the community, beginning Nora's immersion into John's unsettling life.

Nora moves to John’s stately home in Newbury and struggles to adapt to a life without modern conveniences. The house is free of clocks and screens, creating an eerie sense of isolation and control. Her unease grows as she tries to fit into this strange, quiet world.

A young woman dies in a mysterious drowning, and at the funeral home the town’s officials perform disturbing rituals on the corpse. Two ambulance drivers are depicted engaging with the body, and John electrifies the corpse while declaring she is 'safe' and that disease—like AIDS—cannot be contracted through it.

Evan Matthews, the deceased’s brother, identifies the body and quickly suspects something is wrong in Newbury. He warns Nora not to let John get near water, hinting at a larger conspiracy and the possibility that the town is complicit in grisly acts.

Nora questions whether what she witnessed was real or a nightmare. That night, John offers her a warm bath to relax, despite Evan’s warning. She reluctantly accepts, stepping into a boundary she may not be ready to cross.

John attempts to drown Nora in the bath but claims he slipped and accidentally pressed her underwater. Evan arrives, and Nora escapes with him, fleeing toward the cemetery to seek answers about John and the town.

In the cemetery, Evan shows Nora headstones for John’s previous wives, confirming a pattern of disappearances. They break into the crypt of Evan’s sister and find it empty, proving that John and the town are grave robbers. Zombies-like townspeople converge on the cemetery, forcing a hurried escape.

During the chaos, Evan decapitates Morley, one of the funeral chauffeurs. Nora then discovers a tombstone bearing her own name, realizing she has become a target. The undead-like townsfolk close in around them.

The next morning Nora seems to see Morley alive, and she experiences a nightmare in which John kills her in the embalming room. She wakes and is told by Sheriff Porter that Evan is alive, but the town remains ominous and unhelpful.

Nora uses a payphone to contact her former boss Donna, who agrees to come meet her at the funeral home. She is pursued by John and flees through the town, seeking help from anyone who will believe her strange story.

Nora escapes in a hearse and strikes Morley, who later reappears on a motorcycle with a decaying corpse. The chase leads to a roadblock guarded by Sheriff Porter, and Evan reveals himself as undead, stopping the hearse.

John, wearing a Donna disguise, attacks Nora and traps her in a coffin. John, Evan, and Sheriff Porter return her to the funeral home with intentions to kill her, reinforcing the town’s sinister alliance.

Nora awakens back at the diner, realizing the preceding events may have been a nightmare. When John and Morley enter the diner, she shoots both in self-defense, ending the immediate threat—at least in this moment.

The ending implies that John and Morley survived the diner shootout and continue to operate the funeral home with Evan now as their employee. Nora’s nightmare reveals the danger she escaped, but the town’s occult menace endures.
